WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians are to receive $151,733 in a grant from the  U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) through the Tribal Resources Grant Program (TRGP), which supports Native American law enforcement agencies. The announcement was made by U.S. Sens. Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins.
“This grant funding will greatly aid with the Houlton Band of Maliseet’s law enforcement practices. It is vital that community law enforcement professionals and agencies are adequately supported in their mission to keep our communities safe and it is our hope that this funding will allow the tribe to increase their law enforcement presence,” said Sens. Snowe and Collins in a joint statement.
The COPS TRGP is designed to enhance the law enforcement infrastructures and community policing practices in Native American communities, and funds such items as salaries and benefits for new community policing officers, basic equipment, crime fighting technology systems, and training. Since 1995, COPS has provided more than $289.1 million to Native American law enforcement agencies.
