Owl soccer teams unbeaten on NY trip

    The University of Maine at Presque Isle soccer teams had a successful weekend trip to New York, as the women won both of their matches and the men garnered a win and a tie.     The UMPI women shut out the Kangaroos of SUNY-Canton 3-0 on Sunday afternoon in Canton. With the win, the Owls improved to 8-5 on the season, 5-3 in conference play.
    Desiree Smith (Thomaston) led her team in the win over the Roos, scoring two goals on the day and earning one assist. Freshman Lainey Herring (Houlton) picked up the other goal for the Owls and also an assist. UMPI keeper Taylor Ussery (Montclair, Calif.) had four saves on four shots in the victory.
    In Saturday’s game, the Owls easily defeated the Bobcats of Paul Smith’s College 4-0 in an afternoon matchup. UM-Presque Isle was led by sophomore Olivia Jameson (Friendship), who had two goals in the game, while Smith and Carolynn Tuck (Brewer) each had one goal each respectively. Smith, Herring and Danielle Johnson (Jefferson) each earned an assist in the win. Ussery had six saves on six shots.
    The Owls return to action on Sunday, Oct. 25, at home for Senior Day as they host Vermont Technical College. Game time is at 11 a.m.
    The Owl men battled to a 0-0 double overtime tie against the Roos of SUNY-Canton in a conference matchup Sunday. With the tie, the Owls moved to 8-3-2 overall, and 4-3-2 in Sunrise Conference play.
    The UMPI defense continues to play hard and well, earning its seventh shutout of the season. Keeper Richard Felbaum (Saco) had some key saves in the second half of regulation and he turned away five shots on the day.
    In Saturday’s game, Devon Peaslee (Woolwich) had the game-winning and lone goal of the day to give the Owls the 1-0 win. Felbaum earned two saves on two shots.
    The Owls return to action on Saturday, Oct. 24 as they host the Saints of St. Joseph’s College of Vermont for a 1 p.m. game.
    On Sunday, UMPI will hold its annual Senior Day, celebrating the final home game of the season as they host Vermont Tech. Game time for the men is scheduled for 1 p.m.
