The special speaker was Wayne Kilcollins, instructor of wind power technology at Northern Maine Community College. Two years ago, with wind power developing rapidly in Maine, NMCC decided to develop a wind power program. There are currently five wind power sites in Maine, with a total installed power of 174 MW, with more to come over the next few years.
The first eight-week class “Wind Power Theories” started in January 2009 and included 36 students — 24 in Presque Isle and 12 in Houlton. Full curriculum started in August 2009 with 38 students enrolled in the two-year associates program. NMCC students will gain an understanding of the role wind power plays as an energy source and their role as a technician in this expanding career field.
Wind power technology highlights include: safely fundamentals, electrical systems fundamentals, mechanical systems fundamentals, PLC/communication fundamentals, delivery system fundamentals, maintenance concepts, wind turbine siting and park layout, and wind farm management concepts.
