The Central Aroostook Panthers make the trip to Sherman Station to take on the Katahdin Cougars to headline Friday’s boys schedule as the high school basketball season opens play.
In other boys’ games Friday, Washburn is at Easton, Limestone-MSSM travels to Fort Kent and Wisdom hosts Ashland.
Presque Isle hosts Hermon and Caribou hosts Bucksport in Saturday afternoon contests.
On the girls’ side, Madawaska is on the road to take on Limestone-MSSM in a Friday matchup, with Ashland and Wisdom doing battle in St. Agatha.
Presque Isle entertains Hermon Saturday afternoon, while Caribou is home to the Bucksport Golden Bucks that afternoon. Washburn will host Southern Aroostook Saturday night, while Fort Fairfield and Central Aroostook meet on the Tigers’ home floor in a Class D battle.
A  Boys’ Preseason Basketball Tournament was held in Washburn Nov. 27 and 28.
On Friday, the first game saw Easton defeat Ashland, 57-40.  Reid Clark led Easton with 11 points and Lucas Hafford led Ashland with 13. Easton outscored Ashland 20-10 in the fourth quarter to take control of the game.
In the second game that evening, Central Aroostook defeated Washburn, 63-54. Garrett Stiles led the Panthers with 15 points. Mike McClung added 13 and Logan McLaughlin, Brendon York and Dan Brewer each had nine points.
Freshman Mitch Worcester scored 21 to lead Washburn. Jordan McLaughlin had 15 and Conner Fitzpatrick was strong on the boards while adding another 13 points. Washburn led at intermission, 31-29.
On Saturday, Central Aroostook scored early and often, jumping out to a big lead and defeating Easton, 77-33. The Panthers had six players in double figures. Brewer had 19 points, Stiles had 13, York had 11,  while Logan McLaughlin, McClung and Mitch Folsom each had 10 points.
Washburn defeated Ashland 66-39 despite Kenny Tarr’s 20 points. Worcester again paced Washburn with 22 points. Jordan McLaughlin had 14 points and Fitzpatrick chipped in with eight.
Reid Clark of Easton, Connor Fitzpatrick of Washburn, Logan McLaughlin and Mike McClung of Central Aroostook and Lucas Hafford of Ashland were all named to the All-Star Team. Washburn’s Worcester, the leading vote getter for the All-Star team, was named MVP of the tournament.
The Tip-Off Classic was held at Presque Isle High School and Caribou High School Friday and Saturday.     At PIHS Friday, Carleton North bested Presque Isle in a girls game, 52-42, while the Wildcat boys topped Morse of Bath, 63-57. On Saturday, the Waterville girls handed PI a 53-36 loss, while the Wildcats defeated Waterville in boys action, 64-53.
At Caribou Friday, Waterville downed the Caribou girls, while the Vikings got past Waterville in the boys matchup, 56-41. On Saturday, the Viking girls were defeated by Carleton North and the Caribou boys beat Morse, 61-51.
The Girls Preseason Basketball Tournament at Central Aroostook High School in Mars Hill will conclude this evening, with Washburn and Ashland playing at 5:30 p.m. and Madawaska battling Central Aroostook at 7 p.m. An all-tournament team will be selected by a vote of the coaches and staff, with awards presented at halftime of the Madawaska-CA game.
Last night, Ashland and Madawaska met in the first game, followed by Central Aroostook against Washburn.
Presque Isle won the Holiday Cup Hockey Tournament, played Friday and Saturday at the Penobscot Ice Arena in Brewer. On Friday, PI tied Houlton-Hodgdon, 2-2, and defeated John Bapst. In Saturday’s action, PI blanked Hampden, 3-0, before downing Old Town in the championship, 7-1.
The Wildcats will open the regular season Saturday at 1 p.m. against Brewer at the Forum. Prior to the game, a brief ceremony will be held to honor last year’s Eastern Maine championship season.
