Aroostook Times

    Houlton — The useless old lamppost in the edge of the sidewalk on Market Square opposite Osgood’s Store was removed last Friday.
    Close call — Wesley Bamford broke through the ice near the railroad bridge while skating Saturday morning. He succeeded in reaching the shore unaided and went to his home, badly scared, but little the worse otherwise for his cold bath.
    Discovered! — Now that the North Pole has been discovered, half the country is engaged in a controversy as to who discovered it, while the other half is wondering what good a north pole is anyway.

    Houlton — Leonard E. MacNair has resigned his present position to accept the position as District Manager for the Berkshire Life Insurance Company in charge of Aroostook County.
    Annual party — The Houlton Rotary Club was host at the annual party given for the teachers in the schools of Houlton at the Northland Friday evening. An attendance of 160 enjoyed an evening of dancing and entertainment. Rotary President Frank Daggett was taken by surprise when he was presented with a huge birthday cake prepared and artistically arranged by Tingley’s Bakery.

    Nightly caroling — The Houlton Ministerial Association announces a special program of Christmas caroling to be held in Houlton with various churches and groups in the area cooperating. The program will take place each evening at 7 p.m. in Market Square.
    Luncheon speaker — United States Senator Edmund S. Muskie will be the main speaker at a luncheon for local Democrats at the Northland Hotel.
    Meets Santa — Nearly 800 children and adults were at the Gentle Memorial Building to talk with Santa Claus, see movies and sing songs after his arrival in Houlton by plane.
    Wins IGA car — Mrs. Keith Stackhouse was the lucky winner of the small motor car given away last week at he local IGA store by Kermit Esty of Monticello.
    Linneus — The P.T.A. is asking the farmers of that vicinity for a donation of potatoes to be used at the Roosevelt School hot lunch program. Any farmer wishing to donate please bring them to school direct.

AAUW TEA — Forty-five college girls were guests of honor at a tea sponsored by the AAUW at the home of Miss Helen Mitchell on Main Street. Shown from left, Sylvia Newton, Jeanette Benn, Kathleen Howard, Sandra Sylvester, Helen Newton and Judy London being served by Mrs. John Walker.

    More speeding — The extensive paving of streets that has taken place in Houlton during the past two years may have greatly improved driving conditions, but it has also created a problem. That problem is speeding. Radar will be used to enforce the 25 miles-per-hour speed limit and summonses will be issued.
    Wesleyan Coffee — The ladies of the Wesleyan Church entertained more than 150 Houlton area ladies at a morning coffee. A musical program was presented including group singing of Christmas carols.
    Deer kill — Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Glen H. Manuel has announced a 1984 preliminary deer kill figure for Maine of 19,304.
    Employee of the month — Betty Anderson, director of physical therapy at Houlton Regional Hospital was named the first-ever HRH “Employee of the Month,” at the hospital’s Christmas Party.
    On tour — Margaret Hagan’s Nursery School children visited Daniel’s Florist last week. They watched the wreath makers and Katie Fitzpatrick showed her classmates around her parents’, Russell and Karen’s shop. Making the tour were; Becky Berry, Gabriel Goodwin, Jodi Plourd, Heather Craig, Mark Dwyer, Bradley Sewell, Erica Fitzpatrick, Shannon Fitzpatrick and Marcia Lincoln.
