The Caribou varsity swim team made its debut Friday in a meet at Old Town. The host Coyotes won on both the girls and boys sides, with the Caribou girls tallying 34 points and the boys 23. Cintamini Johnson was the winner of the 50 freestyle in 32.7 seconds and teammate Emilie Patton took first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:34.73 to pace the Viking girls. Melissa Russ was third in the 100 freestyle (1:43.19), Patton third in the 50 freestyle (37.1 seconds) and Johnson third in the 100 breaststroke (1:40.14).
Darren Newbegin won the 50 freestyle in 30.94 seconds to lead Caribou in the boys’ competition. Ian Connolly was third in the 100 freestyle with a 1:09.13 clocking.
The Maine School of Science and Mathematics in Limestone also had athletes competing in an exhibition format, but two swimmers recorded state-qualifying times.
Ethan Maguire qualified in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle, while Abby Parker qualified in the 200 individual medley.
Both teams are coached by Erin Tateishi.
On Saturday, a meet will be held at Limestone Community School, with Caribou and the Maine School of Science and Mathematics hosting MDI beginning at 1 p.m.
