Women’s Ski Day set for Sunday
PRESQUE ISLE – Aroostook Women’s Ski Day is slated to be held at the Nordic Heritage Center Sunday, Feb. 7. This is the third year for the event, which has grown significantly since it was initiated in 2008.
“We want to help women get healthy,” said Renee Ennis, one of the organizers of this year’s program. “We want women to appreciate our long winter and to make use of what we have available to us here in northern Maine.
“The Nordic Heritage Center is truly a gem and it’s a way to showcase what the facility has to offer.”
Aroostook Women’s Ski Day actually entails much more than skiing. Following registration, which begins at 9 a.m., a group welcome and Zumba warmup is scheduled from 9:50-10:15 a.m. Clinics for beginning skiers, in both the classical and skate styles, will take place from 10:20-11:50 a.m.. At the same time, an intermediate snowshoe tour and classic and skate tours for intermediate-level skiers will take place.
A pilates class and massages are offered from 10:20-11 a.m., and a nutrition class and massages from 11:05-11:45 a.m.
Lunch is from noon-1 p.m., followed by intermediate classic and skate clinics and beginner snowshoeing and beginning classic and skate ski tours from 1:10-2:40 p.m. Another nutrition class and massages go from 1:10-1:50 p.m., with a second pilates class and massages offered from 1:55-2:35 p.m.
Yoga will wrap up the day’s events from 2:40-3:30 p.m.
“We’re going to make things flexible to meet the needs of all those attending, so it could change along the way based on the individual,” Ennis said.
She said the organization of the Aroostook Women’s Ski Day improves every year.
“There are a lot of people involved in pulling all this together,” Ennis said. “You find out what works and what doesn’t and just try to make sure it’s worth the money.”
Proceeds from the event benefit the Battered Women’s Project.
The advance registration fee is $25, and a brochure and registration form can be obtained by contacting Ennis via e-mail at renee.ennis@gmail.com or by calling Anya Whittington at 768-9537, Amanda Morin at 768-9401 or Ennis at 561-0947. An extra $5 is charged for those registering on the day of the event.
