PRESQUE ISLE — A vehicle accident on the Washburn Rd. Sunday night subsequently ended in the arrest of Matt Skidgel, 21, of Caribou, who was charged with operating under the influence and assaulting an officer.
“The Presque Isle Police Department was notified of a single-car accident with personal injury on the Washburn Rd. around 11:03 p.m. Sunday,” said Officer Kevin Schumacher.
Officers responded to the scene, along with Crown Ambulance and the Presque Isle Fire Department.
Maine Public Service was also notified, because the vehicle had left the roa, striking a utility pole.
“Skidgel was westbound on Route 164 when he lost control of his 1993 Ford pick-up truck. According to witnesses and preliminary investigations, Skigdel was reportedly traveling at an excessive rate of speed,” said Schumacher.
PIFD first responders used hydraulic equipment to extricate Skidgel from his truck. He was transported by Crown to The Aroostook Medical Center with minor injuries.
While at the hospital, Skidgel reportedly became unruly and assaulted one of the PIPD officers. Upon his release from TAMC, Skidgel was arrested for OUI and assault on a police officer.
“Skidgel was transported to the Aroostook County Jail with bail set at $750 cash or $5,000 surety and sober release,” said Schumacher. He is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Caribou on May 20.
Officer Pete Johnson, PIPD, is continuing the crash investigation.
