The second Lenten breakfast was held Sunday, February 28 at the Whittier Congregational Church vestry with Don and Candy McKellar as the chefs in charge. Their menu was homemade muffins, homemade bread, toasted, blueberry pancakes, bacon, eggs, orange juice and coffee. They were assisted by Marion Hoar and Verna Boone and I’m not sure who did the bacon as Sam Sewall, who usually cooked the bacon is still in Missouri with daughter, Cheryl. Anyway, it was all enjoyed by a good crowd.
I am not sure if any of our Catholic friends were there, but they are all welcome to come and enjoy the fellowship with all.
I heard recently from the DeLongs who reside in Brooksville, Fla, and they informed me that it is still cold down there. It has been 27 degrees in the morning and only getting up to the 40s during the day. They went on a visit to Key West recently, but that was no better.
Sister Phyllis is now back in New Hampshire and has had to be plowed twice since leaving the County The big wind this past week had knocked big branches off her trees and caused a mess on her lawn. I have several gray squirrels now getting into my feeders and the other morning I watched one hanging by his hind feet upside down to get at the bird seed in one feeder.
I have a large flock every day of the female goldfinch and they all make short work of the seeds, too. Sure keeps me busy trotting out to feed them all. I have been putting out the old bread and cut-up apples about every night and in the morning lots of deer tracks are there to show that they are still around. They haven’t been coming out in the late afternoon lately where we can see them. I am still putting out food for a cat that has been around the barn.I think he belongs to someone nearby as he(or she) does not act wild. The cat has been around awhile and I guess that’s why I have no mouse problems, which suits me just fine.
