CHCS receives HIV/AIDS grant

HOULTON – Community Health and Counseling Services (CHCS) received a $23,709 grant from the Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) for its HIV/AIDS Medical Case Management.
For the past two years, Eastern Maine AIDS Network (EMAN) subcontracted with CHCS to provide HIV/AIDS medical case management in Aroostook County. DHHS recently awarded a grant that designates CHCS to directly offer the programs, independent from EMAN. CHCS offers these services through its Houlton, Caribou and Fort Kent locations.
This grant offers several benefits to individuals. The greatest benefit is the opportunity to network with others and share support through the monthly meetings.
A large constraint for people living with HIV/AIDS and living in rural areas is the limited resources available. This grant provides resources that assist individuals to stay in their own community without having to travel to larger cities.
“We offer monthly support groups for people. It’s a way for them to feel connected, share solutions, and feel that they can connect with other people that relate to them.” Brian Chapla, Regional Manager for Adult, Child and Family Services.
Through previous training provided by EMAN, CHCS staff will continue to offer support without any gaps in the services to the 23 individuals currently being served through the program.
“Being a part of this group allows you to be with people who are dealing with the same difficulties and struggles, connecting you on a more personal and emotional level.” Chapla stated.
