Bigrock to celebrate 50 years
MARS HILL — On July 4, 1960, a local group staged an event at sunrise on the summit of Mars Hill Mountain to celebrate the first 50-star flag in U.S. history. Mars Hill Skiway, now Bigrock Ski Area, was born of this patriotic event, and ski area officials are looking to make history again to celebrate 50 years of skiing in Mars Hill.
On Saturday, March 27, the first rays of sunlight in the United States will hit the summit of Mars Hill Mountain at 6:20 a.m.
Experienced skiers and snowboarders are invited to join the Aroostook Ski Patrol and Bigrock SnowSchool staff as they hike to the hilltop, survey the sunrise, and then ski back to the lodge for breakfast.
The group will meet in the Bigrock Base Lodge at 5 a.m. Rides on the North Star Chair will be available, or some may choose to hike or ski to the summit. The distance from base to summit is about 1.25 miles, while the distance from the top of the lift to the summit is 0.5 miles.
There is no cost to participate and breakfast will be provided compliments of Bigrock Café.
