100 Years Ago-April 6, 1910

    Meduxnekeag Club — One of the prettiest dances of the season was held at Mansur Hall, when with Japanese decorations, the handsome gowns of the ladies and the fine music of Bryson’s orchestra, made a scene long to be remembered.
    Houlton — At Riley’s Market fresh lobsters are received every Tuesday and Saturday.
    Local — The Houlton Granite and Marble Works have started to erect a building on Bangor Street for an office and display room where they will keep a nice line of granite and marble monuments.
75 Years Ago-April 4, 1935

    Minstrel Show — A real old time minstrel show with a double circle composed of the cream of the musical and entertainment talent of the town, was received by a crowded house at the high school auditorium.
    State queen — Miss Shirley E. Maxell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar S. Maxell, of Orient has been chosen as the Queen of Maine by the Maine Society in St. Petersburg, Fla. to participate in the Festival of States which marks the close of the tourist season.
    Local — A hen owned by Mrs. Cora Rhoda of Hodgdon laid an egg this week that measured eight inches in circumference and six and one-half inches in diameter. The hen was from a brood of chickens hatched at Houlton High last year.

    New florist — Glen McCordic will host an open house at Glen’s Florist and Religious Gift Shop located on Bangor Street.
    Unexpected landing — An Anglican priest was forced to land at Houlton when bad weather closed in between here and Fredericton, N.B. Rev. Carl Major, 24, of Stevensville, Newfoundland was en-route to his home from Toronto with a new plane. Accompanied by his flight instructor, the priest said he plans to use the airplane to make mission calls in 38 scattered Labrador communities. While in Houlton he was guest of Father Robert Blake of the Episcopal Church and assisted him in the Wednesday night service.
    Bridgewater — Rita Kingsbury and Mary Harding represented Bridgewater Classical Academy at the annual Aroostook League Speaking Contest held at Easton High School.
    Miss Freeport — Miss Carol Ivey, 18, of Houlton was named Miss Freeport. The University of Maine freshman was presented with a $250 scholarship to further her education. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Byron Ivey. Ivey will compete in the Miss Maine Pageant later in the spring.

TROOP 194 — The members of Brownie Troop #194 held their Investiture Ceremony with leaders Ann McCarthy, Maureen Dhuy and Claire Audette hosting.     DeMolay — The Houlton chapter of DeMolay was re-activated with an impressive installation. Thirty-six candidates received the initiatory. Special introductions were given to Sherwood Kelso, Roger Lincoln, Donald Nelder and George Harrison who were members of the first Houlton Chapter from 1928 to 1935. Richard Denton, David Hammond and Lynn York were also introduced. They served as Master Councilors during the Chapter’s existence from 1956 to 1972.
    Plea for classrooms — The Board of Directors of SAD 29 played to a full house Monday night. Their audience was comprised largely of teachers from Houlton Elementary School, who were back before the Board to learn what, if anything was being done about installing partitions in their open classrooms. The answer they received from Superintendent William McDonnell was one perhaps they expected, but had hoped they would not hear. There is no money in the proposed budget.
    Ivey’s — Henry and Marcene Ivey have recently opened Ivey’s Motor Lodge at I-95 on the North Road, making a total combination of 70 rooms with Ivey’s Motel and Restaurant on Bangor Street now available under their management.
    Dunn’s — A new telephone system has been installed at Dunn Furniture Co. It is the first of its kind in the state and one of the most sophisticated telephone systems available today. The system functions as a private branch manager and is customer programmable.
