STOCKHOLM — The Snowy Mountain Trail Club is a small group of community members who keep their beautiful trail system alive through their own volunteer labor and donations; this year, however, the modest group took all the proceeds from one of their fund-raisers and gave it to the Salvation Army in support of those in Haiti who are in desperate need of assistance.
Proceeds from the Karen Sprague Races in February were donated by the Snowy Mountain Trail Club to the Salvation Army to be used toward disaster relief in Haiti. Present for the donation included Club Treasurer Tammy Cote, President Tom Campbell, Salvation Army Captain Steve Pearl, and Club Secretary David Strange.
Through the Karen Sprague races held around Feb. 14th every year, the Snowy Mountain Trail Club raised $2,700 with assistance from the Eureka Hall and the family of the late Karen Sprague.
Approximately 80 skiers — some as young as Pre-K — participated in the races.
“We were having our annual meeting for the Karen Sprague Race, and race organizers brought up the idea of donating race proceeds to Haiti,” explained Club President Tom Campbell. “We thought it was a good cause and a great way to go.”
Captain Steve Pearl of the Salvation Army visited the Snowy Mountain Trails on March 27 to meet with Snowy Mountain Trail Club members and receive their donation.
“[The Salvation Army] could not do what we’re doing without the support of the individuals and corporations that provide us with the funding and materials to do it,” he said, expressing his appreciation to members of the Snowy Mountain Trail Club. “Since the earthquake, the Army has been out in the streets of Haiti providing food, shelter, clothing, tents, and continues to provide that kind of assistance today and will continue providing that assistance in the coming months, as it is obvious that those necessities are going to be needed for a long time.”
