Owl teams finally hosting contests

    The University of Maine at Presque Isle softball and baseball teams will play their first home games of the season this week. 

    The Owl softball team hosts Maine Maritime Academy for a doubleheader Thursday beginning at 2 p.m. at Presque Isle High School.
    On Saturday and Sunday, league games are planned against SUNY-Canton. On Saturday at Caribou High School, doubleheaders begin at 1 p.m. for both teams. On Sunday, Presque Isle High School is the location for doubleheaders which begin for softball at 11 a.m. and for baseball at noon.
    The UMPI baseball team begins the week with a doubleheader at Bates College today beginning at 1 p.m.
    On Thursday at Hippach Field in Farmington, the UMF baseball team broke a 4-4 tie with a four-run seventh inning and held on to down the Owls, 9-8, in non-conference action.
    With the game tied at 4-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, the first five Farmington batters reached with Kyle Shea getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Brian Morrison delivering an RBI single for a 6-4 lead. After a run scored on a fielder’s choice, Jack Macvane put the Beavers ahead, 8-4, with an RBI single.
    The Beavers added another run in the eighth to make it 9-4 before the Owls plated four runs in the ninth, featured by an RBI double by Corey Harding and a run-scoring hit by Stephen Thorne. However, UMF reliever Ryan DiPompo was able to fight through the rough inning to close out the 9-8 win.
    Harding led UMPI with a single, a double and two RBI, while Tyler Delaney supplied two singles and two RBI and Jake Fillebrown also had two hits.
    Ryan Hill took the loss for UMPI with four hits allowed over an inning-plus of relief.
    The Owls returned to the diamond the following day and dropped a 16-9 decision to the Mountaineers of Southern Vermont College. With the loss, the Owls’ record fell to 2-22 on the season.

    Delaney led his team at the plate with a 3-for-5 effort and scoring two runs in the game. Second baseman Brian Andrews also went 3 for 5, scoring twice and knocking in another, while Corey Fournier had two hits scored three times. The Owls banged out 12 hits in the loss.

    Clint Carter suffered the pitching loss. In 2-1/3 innings of work, Carter allowed seven hits, struck out one and walked two. Ryan Hill and Seth Dorr both pitched in relief for the Owls.
