The Cary Library recently benefited from the generosity of the Maine Community Foundation to help support their summer reading program. The library received a grant for $1,000 from the Rose and Samuel Rudman Library Fund to help support the 2010 summer reading program.
The theme for the children’s summer program is “Exploring the Mysteries of Water.” The teen program will concentrate on learning about the Meduxnekeag Watershed.
This grant enables Cary Library to increase library materials on water, watersheds, rivers and water safety by allowing the library to purchase books, educational posters, audiobooks and DVDs covering the many different aspects of water. Cary Library staff will have speakers present information on the “Majesties of the Pond,” the Meduxnekeag Watershed and GIS mapping, as well as several tours that are being planned.
The summer program starts with signup the week of June 14 and reporting will start the following week (June 21). The goal, by the end of the program, is to have everyone leave with a better understanding of the importance of water, how to use, conserve and protect it; what a watershed is and how important the community is to its healthy existence and how it relates to keeping water clean.
Many libraries operate with budgets that are stretched to the limit and struggle to provide programs for children realizing how important it is for the community youth to have a venue to develop and grow as individuals.
“We are very pleased that the Maine Community Foundation recognizes this and we are appreciative of the Rose and Samuel Rudman Library grant that enables us to explore “The Mysteries of Water,” said library director Linda Faucher.
