The Houlton tennis teams opened up their season against Penobscot Valley High School last Saturday at the Houlton Community Park tennis courts.
The boys team won 5-0, while the girls suffered a 2-3 loss.
“The boys are looking strong,” said Houlton tennis coach Jean Maunder. “And, the girls will be stronger than last year.”
Leading the girls team as a first singles player is senior Hiba Bilal, a four-year varsity player.
“She has been really practicing hard,” Maunder said. “She even comes out to the boys’ practice.”
Playing for the girls team are: seniors, Holly Bouvier, a fourth-year player, along with Ashley Hannigan and Maggie Garcia, second-year players; juniors Kelsey Fitzpatrick, Megan Gerath, Daisy Torres and Lizzy Garcia, all second-year players, and rounding out the squad is sophomore Courtney Bragan, a first-year player. Managing the team is senior Danielle Daigle.
On the boys side, Maunder said, “A wonderful surprise is freshman D.J. McGary, who is already playing first doubles. All singles boys should dominate.”
Playing for the boys team are: senior, Aaron Anderson, first-year; juniors, Tyler Delano, third-year player, along with Craig Thomas, second-year player and Zach Ritchie, first-year; sophomores, Zach Harvey, Luke Anderson and Cody Woods, all second-year players, as well as Jordan Russell, Avery Kibler, Jacob McGuffin and Nick Carmichael, all first-year players. Capping the squad is freshman McGary and second-year manager junior Nelson McGuffin.
