The Houlton Knights varsity (grades 9-12), junior high (grades 7-8) and peewee (grades 4-6) teams will be holding sign-ups for the upcoming 2010 season on Thursday, May 6 from 5-7 p.m. and Friday, May 7 from 5-7 p.m. at the Houlton High School gymnasium on Bird Street in Houlton. All area youth in grades 4-12 are encouraged to play; no prior football experience is necessary.
The peewee team will be playing against teams from the Presque Isle/Caribou area in a first of its kind age division competition. The junior high team will be competing against teams from the Presque Isle/Caribou area, as well as a team from Madawaska. The varsity Knights will be vying for a “state eight-man football championship versus teams from Presque Isle/Caribou, Madawaska, Milo, BCH (Bradford, Corinth, Hudson) and Guilford.
In other news, volunteers and parents are needed to help the program with a booster club for the purpose of assisting the program with fund-raising and to run the concessions program. In addition, organizers are currently seeking game referees to officiate games on all levels. Training is provided, and all officials will be paid for games that they officiate, as well as for travel to games out of the area.
The recruitment of game officials is of the utmost importance to the program, said Knights coach Brian Reynolds. Without officials from the Houlton area to referee home games, Houlton teams will not be able to host home contests. This will force local teams to play their entire schedule on the road, said Reynolds.
Please contact Reynolds at 694-0092, Andy Hay at 532-6547 or Brian Forest at 694-1026 if you have any questions or are interested in volunteering for the booster club, or would like to work as a game official.
