It’s Bike riding time!
Parents with weather getting better, and the kids wanting to get out and ride their bikes; lets all take a minute to remind them of a few bicycle safety tips.
• Wear a bicycle helmet
• Ride with traffic
• Ride to the right if you are moving slower then traffic, unless you are turning left, passing another bicycle or vehicle, or avoiding hazards.
• Stop at stop signs and red lights.
• Use a light, reflectors and reflective clothing during darkness.
• Wear bright clothing during the daytime.
• Keep a safe distance from parked cars.
• Use proper hand signals when turning, stopping, or changing lanes.
• Use extra caution when it is raining, and allow extra time to stop.
• Cross railroad tracks at a right angle, “perpendicular”.
• Walk your bike when using a crosswalk.
• Do not wear headphones listening to music.
• Keep your bike properly maintained so its safe.
• Do not drink anything when riding your bike
• Do not use your cell phone or text when riding your bike.
• Ride defensively.
• Kids if you are not sure of your hand signals, have your parents go over them with you.
• Be alert for road hazards.
• Watch for cars at cross streets and driveways.
• Obey all traffic laws.
• Be aware of parked cars and watch for car doors that may open.
Parents we all learn from practice, so don’t just throw this away, cut it out and place it on your refrigerator. This will remind you to go over it with you child a couple times during the summer. Adults remember that are children learn from watching us, so please set a good example, send the right message, safety is for everyone.
