Houlton Council of Catholic Women

Houlton Council of Catholic Women met after the 11 a.m. Mass on April 11 in the parish center. Twenty-eight members were in attendance plus Rev. David Raymond, moderator, Deacon Albert Burleigh with his wife, Sonja, guest.
We recited our traditional prayers led by co-president Janet Barker. We had lunch, prepared by the April committee, and then the meeting resumed.
Reports were given by treasurer Bernette Roach, secretary Jane Stile and corresponding secretary Lois Downing.
Janet Barker told us the annual rummage sale will be the first weekend in October. Most Rev. Richard Malone was present at St. Mary for First Holy Communion/Confirmation 8 a.m. service April 18 and remained for the 11 a.m. Mass. Food items were given for this reception from Council members.
Some of the members received notice of the quarterly meeting held in Gorham April 24. None of our members were able to attend because of other commitments.
Our May meeting is scheduled for May 3 in the parish center. Please call Bernette Roach for reservation if you plan to attend. The dinner is to be catered by Cathy Bither.
Betty Ann Childers shared with us the fact that the Maliseet Nation has been approved for a health center. She also told us that a senior citizen luncheon will be May 5 at the parish center with Steve Farnham, RSVP representative, as guest speaker. If you plan to attend, please bring your own sandwich. Beverages will be provided.
Fr. Ron LaBarre will be celebrating his 50th anniversary to the priesthood. Jane Stile read the prayer for priests. Birthdays and anniversaries were acknowledged for April.
Fr. Dave spoke on new beginnings and then led us in prayer. Molly Bailey won the door prize and the seminarian fund was taken up.
The rosary will be said at future meetings, as voted by the majority.
Betty Ann introduced Sonja Burleigh and she gave us a spiritual tour of the church, in the church, and it was well received.

Happy Losers meet

On April 28 the Happy Losers held their weekly meeting at the Congreational Church vestry in Island Falls. Jackie Pratt our leader, opened the meeting with our pledge and roll call. We had 10 ladies weigh-in and attend our meeting.
Winnie Desmond was the loser of the week, and Shirley Sides was runner-up. Great job ladies. Reports were given by our secretary and treasuer for the week. Jackie Pratt was the person who lost the most weight for the month of March and April.
Riva Hawkes led the program for the week, her topic was Make Friends with your Scales. Meetings are always interesting and informative. Please feel welcome to our group every Wed.8 a.m. to 8:45a.m. weigh-ins and meeting starts at 9 a.m. Call 365-4884 for more information.

TOPS #ME 0233, HOULTON

Take Off Pounds Sensibly #0233 of Houlton met at the Aldergate building on High Street for its Friday, April 30 meeting. Twenty-two ladies werre in attendance with five being KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly). Joyce Estey is leader and was present to start and end the meeting.
Loser of the week was Margaret Dudley with Sharon Martin as runner-up. The skinny dish was taken home by Joyce Estey. Ten minutes of exercises were led by Barbara Troy. Reports were given by Lois Downing. Denise Kinney spoke on the Umbrella contest and said that it is going well. A chart is on the wall to depict the raindrops for losers and gainers.
Margaret Dudley is back and gave us her address: 38 Reservoir Hill Road, Houlton, telephone number 532-3739 and birthday as June 15, cell number 694-1465. Plans were made for SRD in Bangor in May. Barbara Grant led the group in voting for a theme and we ended up with “Take Back the Power.”
Barbara Hogan continued her talk on the body from the week before and asked the ladies to write a letter to our bodies and bring it next week. Everyone is welcome.
