FORT KENT — During the April 21 meeting of the Aroostook County Commissioners, County Administrator Douglas Beaulieu informed commissioners Paul Adams, Normal Fournier and Paul Underwood that the Squapan renaming committee has unanimously agreed to suggest replacing Squapan with Scopan after it was discovered that the town was referenced as such in an 1860 map.     Once the recommended name is approved by the municipalities, it will be brought back to the County Commissioners and on to Augusta from there.
Beaulieu estimated that ‘Scopan’ would most likely be presented to the Commissioners as early as June or July.
He also reported that Maine Board of Corrections officials commended the commissioners for The County’s strict adherence to their budget.
Prudent with county expenditures, Beaulieu presented the commissioners with a status update on the Houlton Superior Courthouse roof, which is leaking. The commissioners continue mulling over repair options.
The next meeting of the Aroostook County Commissioners will take place tonight, at 5:30 at the Caribou Courthouse.
