There are only 12 more days before the departure date of Monday, May 24, for the Destination Imagination teams. That is when the group will begin their trip to the global competition held in Knoxville, Tenn.
The students from both teams have worked hard at a variety of fund-raising events with everything from washing cars, playing games, holding a yard sale and even cleaning up at a landfill. They have certainly earned their trip the hard way, and all are certain that they will continue to represent Washburn in grand style during the “globals.” students will be returning on Monday, May 31.
There are still a few days to help them out financially. They’ll be having a Zumba-thon at the high school gym from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 22. Instructor Paige Huston is volunteering her time to put on this event, and there will be a minimum donation of $10 for two 50-minute sessions, with a break in between.
The teams have an “account” at the Washburn Redemption Center where owners Gerald and Darcy Carney will keep track of bottles donated to the teams and deliver the money to them, including an extra one cent per can.
The teams are willing to do some yard work or other jobs home owners wish done — all for a donation. Anyone wishing to hire out these energetic guys and gals may contact them through Tracy Reed at the high school at 455-4501.

Ten friends and classmates of Skylar Mette helped her celebrate her 8th birthday during a special party on Friday, April 30. The girls all had their hair done in “Up Do’s”, done by Shelia Burtt, with help from Karen Theriault, Evelyn Chapman, Lindsey Gagnon and Christina Shorey at the Total Look in Presque Isle.
Despite a few requests from the partygoers, there were no cuts or coloring procedures done, but all had a good time choosing their own special styles. The girls were also served treats including crackers, lollipops and they enjoyed coloring while waiting their turn in the beauty chairs. Skyler’s sister, Laina Mette, and her friend, Taylor Howe, painted the girls’ nails as well.
Those attending included: Kristen Dube, Reagan Whipkey, Kyra Schumacher, Tia Savoy, Emily Driscoll, birthday girl Skylar Mette, Lila McCrum, Hannah Boddy, Bree Turner, Maggie Castonguay and Hanna Kilcollins. Mom Lisa Mette got compliments on how well-behaved and quiet the girls were during the special and very fun girls’ afternoon outing.
