HOULTON — All Michele MacDonald wanted was a tree to remember her late husband by.
So imagine her shock when she learned that the tree she planted in his memory had been stolen.
MacDonald, a resident of Houlton, purchased a tree in 2007 in memory of her husband Clark MacDonald, who died in 2006. Hers was one of four trees missing from the park, which is also home to the historical “Boy and the Leaking Boot” statue.
MacDonald first noticed the tree was missing May 11.
“It was so sad,” she said. “I would come by and look at the tree every day. I was anxious to find out what happened.”
The town of Houlton has told MacDonald that they would replace the tree, along with the others that went missing.
“What bothered me the most was the idea that someone would come and steal a tree,” she said. “It’s the principle of the whole thing.”
Anyone with information on the missing trees should contact the Houlton Police Department at 532-2287.
