Caribou High School students who recently completed the Future Firefighter program provided by the Caribou Fire and Ambulance Department include, from left, in front: Nathan Kamm, Adam Chartier, Preston Jackson, Trevor Oplinus, Reggie Rideout and Caribou Firefighter Jim Mockler, coordinator of the program. In back are, Dylan Cyr, Dann Cyr, Justin Doody and Jacob Beaupre.

According to Fire Chief Roy Woods, “This class is offered to any high school students so they can see if firefighting is a career that they may be interested in or it may spark their interest in fire service so that at some point they will want to become volunteer firefighters.”
In January, the nine students — Adam Chartier, Nathan Kamm, Dann and Dylan Cyr, Trevor Oplinus, Preston Jackson, Justin Doody, Reggie Rideout and  Jacob Beaupre began their future firefighter class at the station studying subjects including basic fire behavior, fire equipment, ambulance operations and first-aid. These were just some of the topics the students received instruction in.
The nine potential firefighters also completed CPAR training. Jim Mocker, program coordinator, stated, “These students were just great to work with. They were very interested and enthusiastic — class attendance was nearly 100 percent.”
On the evening of June 3, the class culminated with a spaghetti supper held at the Caribou fire station, hosted by the future firefighters for their family members and veteran members of the department.
