LIMESTONE — Family, friends and classmates of 30 Maine School of Science and Mathematics graduates gathered on May 22 for the 15th annual commencement with a special keynote speaker Representative John Martin, a Democrat from Eagle Lake. Martin has been a strong supporter of the school on a legislative level since MSSM was created.
“In my opinion, [MSSM] is a school which has really outdone itself,” he said in his speech, citing how the success of each graduate further promotes the school.
This year’s graduating class consists of youths ranging from Fort Fairfield to South Korea; the 30 students were offered a total of $4,914,360 in scholarships and aid, having received a total of 109 acceptances from 61 separate colleges. For the schools that they chose to attend, the students were given a total of $1,582,800 at the colleges they have chosen to attend.
“After leaving the MSSM, we will all go off into the world where we will be part of a much broader crowd, yet by the time we leave MSSM we will all know how to hold our own as individuals among a group. We know how to make our own opinions heard by the crowd and we know how to absolutely consider the opinions of those around us. We define greatness,” said student speaker Samuel Putney.
Among the graduating class included Adaeze Olugbemi of Presque Isle and Eric Ramsay of Fort Fairfield.
Olugbemi will be attending Boston University, where she plans on continuing her journey to become a doctor. At MSSM, she sang in free-block A Cappella, was captain of the tennis team and participated in prom preparations.
Ramsay also participated in A Cappella, and was a member of Key Club and Student Ambassadors. He will be attending Bowdoin College in the fall.
