Hut constructed
through family support
WASHBURN NEWS

Members in Troop 177 have begun their summer season in earnest. One of their first activities was the construction of a special Quartermaster Hut at Camp Harrison. The troop was able to have this hut due to the continuing support of the late Chester Akerson and his family. The troop was named as recipients of memorial funds after Chester’s passing in January, and the wheels were set in motion as to the best use of the funds to show the Scouts’ thanks to Chester and the family for his many years’ of support.
It was decided to build a Quartermaster Hut, which is an important focal point used to distribute and house necessary supplies at one location and is one of the most important facilities to the Boy Scout Program. This eliminates needed items being left behind on outings, allows for a constant inventory of items and condition checks. The items to be stored in the hut will include those needed for campouts, district and council events and even some troop meetings. One item also to be stored at the hut is the Klondike derby sled which was carefully and lovingly made by Chester Akerson.
Troop 177 has been blessed to have had Chester Akerson as a friend of the troop and has benefited greatly from his various woodworking skills over the years. He assisted in building the patrol kitchens, wash stations and a dog sled, as well as many other much-needed smaller projects that he completed for the troop.
A special dedication ceremony was held on Sunday, May 16, opened with a welcome by Leader Stacey Skinner. Color Guard Scouts Brandon Cropley, Taylor Skinner, Parker Thompson and Tyler Jardine presented colors, the Pledge of Allegiance was read by SPL Curtis Thompson, and the opening prayer was given by Reverend Lawrence Beals. A special wreath in memory of Chester and Arline Akerson was presented by Scouts Daniel Roy and Bryce Roix.
Scoutmaster Larry Harrison presided over the ceremony and included in his speech was a quote from the founder of Boy Scouting, Baden Powell’s “Building Leaders for a Better Tomorrow.” A grandson of Chester and Arline Akerson, Troy Wilcox, gave a special thanks to all who were involved in this memoriam. The Akerson’s children — Pam Wilcox, Kathie Woodcock, Christine Finemore and Richard Akerson — cut the ribbon to the new building’s door, troop members recited the Scout Law led by Jacob Reed and the Color Guard retired the colors.

The town of Washburn is fortunate to have the Boy Scouts from Troop 177 who placed the approximate 35 flags along Washburn’s Main Street. The Scouts do this for all major events and holidays relating to the flag, and residents are grateful for this service. This Memorial Day it was the turn for Randy Thompson and his son Parker to put the flags up early in the morning, and Tim Roix and son Bryce to take them down before sunset.
Darcy Carney recently left her full-time job in Presque Isle to join her husband, Gerald Carney, in the bottle redemption business. The couple’s sons, Jarad and Isaac Carney, also work at the Center whenever they can. The Carney’s granddaughter, Catelyn Coulombe, is actively involved by changing her chores at the home. She helps by doing laundry and keeping some of the housework done, making it easier on Darcy when the work day is done.
By Darcy being in the shop full-time, it enables Gerald to go out on the road, where he has recently picked up several new accounts. Darcy has also realized how much work there is in sorting, counting and bagging up bottles for pick-up by the big companies. Gerald has truly appreciated his wife’s work ethics. By working together, the couple get to spend some extra time together.
A NEW STAFF MEMBER joined the Redemption Center. Darcy Carney joined her husband, Gerald Carney, working full-time now at the business.
