ROCKPORT — Drawing arguably the toughest seed possible in their first playoff, the No. 8 Presque Isle girls tennis team (9-4 overall) was no match for top-ranked Camden Hills (13-0) Friday afternoon as the host Windjammers posted a 5-0 shutout.
Camden Hills went on to beat No. 4 Ellsworth in the semifinals, advancing to the Eastern Class B championship, where it will face No. 3 Caribou at 4:30 p.m. at Colby College in Waterville.
With two of the top 12 singles players in the state — Windjammers Carissa English and Emma Blakely — Camden Hills had a definite advantage in Friday’s quarterfinal match against Presque Isle.
“We knew going in that we would have to play our best game of the season against undefeated Camden Hills,” Presque Isle coach Monica Bearden said. “I was pleased that we won as many games as we did. I think we did well against one of the top teams in Eastern Maine and probably in the state.”
The playoff marked the final matches for Wildcat seniors Kailee Ireland, Madelyn Carson and Deidre Dicker.
“We will certainly miss our three seniors,” Bearden said. “I hope the rest of the girls play a lot this summer and I have confidence that they will step up next year.”
The individual results, with Camden Hills players listed first, were, Carissa English defeated Ireland 6-3, 6-1; Blakeley defeated Dani Wolland 6-4, 6-1; and Julia Kosowsky defeated Mad. Carson 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles, Jessie Mathews and Kayla Hart defeated Lindsay Michaud and Divya Bisht 6-2, 6-0; and Jamie Burgess and Erika Alex defeated Deidre Dicker and Kathryn Sharp 6-3, 6-2. .
