Educators list summer meetings
The Aroostook Retired Educators Association (AREA) President Carol McElwee has announced the group’s 2010 summer plans.
Organized in 1956, AREA is the state’s largest county retired educators organization, with more than 400 members. Noontime dinner meetings are the last Tuesday of each month, June through September. These take place in various towns across the County so that members have a chance to attend at least one within their own area. Volunteer callers phone retirees before each meeting to determine numbers attending. Any retired educator can get further information about joining and/or attending the dinners by contacting McElwee at 498-8605.
The first dinner meeting this year will be Tuesday, June 29, at the Southern Aroostook Agricultural Museum in Littleton. Chloe Wheeler will present a musical program. The annual Remembrance Program will also take place.
On July 27 a program will feature yoga therapy by Sylvia Martin following the meal at the University at Fort Kent’s Nowland Hall.
The Aug. 31 meeting will be at the Limestone Job Corps Center with a program presenting state office political candidates.
The final session, Sept. 27, will be at the Presque Isle Inn and Convention Center where Dan Ladner and Janice LaPointe will offer a program of musical entertainment.
All meetings have registration and a social hour at 11 a.m., followed by the meal at noon. A short business session is held at each function. Attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable food or household staple items for area food pantries.
Current AREA officers are: President Carol McElwee, Caribou; 1st Vice President Patricia Pelletier, Allagash; 2nd Vice President Diane Parent, Caribou; Recording Secretary Lorraine Redwine, no town specified; Corresponding Secretary Patricia Dow, Fort Kent; Treasurer Paul Bouchard, Fort Kent; and Assistant Treasurer Rena Kearney, Mars Hill.
