Washburn Rotary Club plans truck pull Saturday at Fairgrounds

The Washburn Rotary Club will be sponsoring a Truck pull at the Northern Maine Fairgrounds on Saturday, July 3. The pull is sanctioned by Maine State Truck and Tractor Pullers Association and will take place rain or shine. Registration begins at 4 p.m. with the Pulls starting at 6 p.m. All proceeds will go to benefit Washburn Rotary projects. For further information contact Rotarian Peggy Bugbee at 754-8424.

Washburn Legion visits Loring Military Heritage Center

On June 15 several members and guests of Washburn’s Oscar Dow Post 48 American Legion traveled to The Loring Commerce Center to tour the Loring Military Heritage Center. The tour guides were Matt Cole, the Center vice president and Clarence McLaughlin. The group saw displays dating back to the early construction of the base right up to the closure. Many interesting photos and memorabilia are housed in the Heritage Center and added space will be constructed in the near future.
Legion member Larry Harrison, loaned several items from his days stationed at Loring when he was NCOIC of the base Honor Guard.
Those attending included Bud and Betty Umphrey, Bill and Ruth Flewelling, Herman Carman, Kermit and Sue Fuller, Robert and Rhoda Brown, Willie and Judith Drost, Larry Ross, Dale Whitten, Kathy Philbrook and Larry Harrison.
Post 49 meets at the Washburn Civic Center the second Tuesday of each month, and all veterans are welcome to attend.

Up and coming events

On Wednesday, July 7, the Washburn Beavers ATV Club will hold their regular meeting at their Gould Street clubhouse starting at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday, July 18, the group will be leaving Washburn at 9 a.m. for a ride to Van Buren. The next scheduled meeting for the Washburn Town Council will be held on Monday, July 12 at 7 p.m. at the Washburn Civic Center. All interested residents are urged to attend.

Starting Tuesday, July 6, there will be important training for caregivers to more fully understand dementia and the impact on taking care of a loved one. This will be a six-week course with a total of 12 hours of training consisting of two hours per week. The classes will be held each Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Perham Baptist Church. Trainers are Katie Burby and Sharon Ann Berz from the Aroostook Agency on Aging

August Festival updates

The theme for the 30th Washburn August Festival in 2010 is “The World of Adventure” and the date for the weekend festival is Aug. 20, 21 and 22. The King and Queen will be Sterling and Sandra Haynes of Wade, and the Grand Marshall is none other than Washburn’s own, Arnie Devoe.
Included in the annual Alumni Supper and social time is a special 50th Class Reunion being celebrated by the WHS Class of 1960. Class members (anyone who began high school in 1956 are urged to send in their reservations and other information they wish to be included in a booklet that will tell what their lives have been like in the past 50 years.

Members of the 2010 August Festival Committee will be raffling off a full-sized quilt with the “Overall Sam” pattern, and may be seen at the bank window. Tickets are $2 each or three for $5 and may be purchased from any committee member or at Katahdin Trust Company in Washburn.
One of the crowd favorites for the festival weekend is the car show, and it will be held in the old playground field across from the soccer field on Saturday, Aug. 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. There will be many door prizes and a 50/50 drawing. Entries will including cars from antiques and pre-1950s, street and hot rods, cars from the ‘50s and ‘60s and up-to-date vehicles as well as trucks, both street and farm categories. The show will also include bikes ranging from tricycles, motor cycles and more. Also this year, tractors will be represented.

On Sunday, Aug. 22, the Washburn Trail Runners Snowmobile Club will be sponsoring a fun canoe and kayak race. The starting point for the race is the Gardner Creek Rd. at Diamond Flats and ending at the Boat Landing. The next Washburn August Festival Committee meeting will be held on Tuesday, July 13th at the Washburn Civic Center at 6 p.m. Any interested residents are urged to attend.

Rec Center schedule

On Wednesday, June 30 there will be K-2 Basketball from 8:30-9:15 a.m. , grades 3-4 play from 9:30-10:30 a.m. and grades 5-8 play from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
There will be swimming lessons at the Presque Isle Indoor Pool on Wednesday, June 30 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
There will be T-Ball from 6-6:45 p.m. at the Elementary school fields on Wednesday, June 30.
On Thursday, July 1, there will be Soccer practice at the Elementary school fields with Grades K-2 playing from 8:30-9:15 a.m., Grades 3-4 play from 9:30-10:30 a.m. and Grades 5-8 take to the fields from 10:30-11:15 a.m.
Also on Thursday, July 1, there will be Arts and Crafts at the Rec Center. Grades 5-8 will go from 9:30-10:30 a.m. and Grades K-4 will be held from 10:30-11:15 a.m.
The special Friday Field trip for July 2, will be ice-skating at the Forum and lunch will be provided and the picnic will be held at Mantle Lake. The cost is $3 and the van will be leaving the Rec Center at 11:30 a.m. and returning at 3 p.m.
On Tuesday, July 6 there will be Soccer at the Elementary school fields, with grades K-2 playing from 8:30-9:15 a.m. , grades 3-4 going from 9:30-10:30 a.m. and Grades 5-8 playing from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Also on Tuesday, July 6, there will be cooking classes held at the Rec Center with Grades 5-8 cooking from 9:30-10:30 a.m. and Grades 2-4 claiming the kitchen from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
Each Tuesday evening there will be Minor League Baseball practice and each Thursday evening there will be Minor League games for ages 7-9.
Each Monday and Wednesday evenings there will be Major League Baseball for ages 10-12. Games will be played against other little league teams in the surrounding communities.
Junior Softball for ages 9-12 will be played on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and practices will be on Monday and Wednesday afternoons. The team will play both home and away games against other communities.
Pony League baseball for ages 13-16 will be played each Monday and Wednesday afternoons in Presque Isle and Washburn will be combining with Ashland to make a team.
The “Summer Free Breakfast and Lunch Program” is currently ongoing Mondays through Thursdays, with breakfast served from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and lunches served from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The meals will be served at the Elementary School cafeteria.
