CASWELL – Samuel G. Leavitt, 98, passed away Friday, June 25, at a Caribou hospital. He lived a life full of adventure while surrounded by family and friends. Sam was born in Limestone, August 31, 1911, the son of Robert and Edna (Griffeth) Leavitt.
A successful potato farmer for 43 years in the Limestone/ Caswell area, Sam came from a long line of potato farmers. Following in his father and grandfather’s footsteps, he began farming in 1948, with 75 acres of potatoes and oats. An avid fisherman and hunter, Sam had the head of an albino deer he shot mounted on his living room wall. He regularly received calls from family asking him how to dress a deer or partridge. He considered his family to be the center of his life. Sam was the oldest citizen in Caswell, and the current holder of the Boston Cane.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Fred and Rena Leavitt of Caswell, Wayne and Jeannelle Leavitt of Connor, Lloyd and Judy Leavitt of Limestone, Gregory and Raymonde Leavitt of Caswell. He is also survived by his sister, Jackie and her husband, Norman Beaupre of Caribou. He also leaves behind his granddaughters and their spouses, Karen and Dave Rader of Delaware, Rhonda and Tyler Tweed of Wells, Robbin and Jimmy Bacon of Caribou, Aimee and Sam Whitmore of Corinna; his grandsons and their spouses, Steve and Diane Leavitt of Limestone, Glen Leavitt of Boston, Wade and Jill Leavitt of Connor, Randy and Lori Leavitt of Fort Fairfield, and Travis Leavitt of Limestone. He also leaves behind 15 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Samuel was predeceased by his beloved wife, Melvina (Corrow) Leavitt of more than 62 years in 2003; an infant son, Baby Leavitt; and eight brothers and sisters.
Friends and family called from 6-9 p.m. on Sunday, June 27, at Lancaster Morgan Funeral Home, 11 Clover Street, Caribou. A funeral service was held on Monday, June 28 at 10 a.m. at Lancaster Morgan Funeral Home, Father Jean Paul Labrie officiating. A reception directly followed services at the Holy Rosary Parish Center in Caribou. Interment will take place on Saturday, July 3, at 10 a.m. at St. Louis Cemetery in Limestone.
