Pet Talk

I know it isn’t even July yet (although by the time you read this it might be) and I know summer technically just started, even though we have been blessed with wonderful weather for months now, and I know you’re going to be mad at me if I talk to you about an event in September because nobody, including me, wants to accept the fact that September is right around the corner, but – we have a program coming up on September 11th that is so big and so exciting that I just have to share with you.
Last year the Houlton Humane Society hosted “Rockin’ the Doghouse” in Monument Park. Organized by Jon Miller, this was an all day event including a bake sale, kids games, hot dogs and burgers, a car show, and many other activities throughout the day.
This year Jon is once again organizing this event and it’s going to be bigger and better than ever. Already there are over 40 cars registered for the car show, we are going to have Humvees on display and will be giving rides in them, there will be a dunking booth, snow cones, cotton candy, a Battle of the Bands going on all day long, a craft table, a food table, hot dogs and soda, popcorn, you name it. There will be more kids games going on all day long, lots of prizes, possibly a clown or two, Tatitudes will be there, the list just goes on and on.
We want to make sure that you mark your calendar to join us on this day, rain or shine, we’ll be there, under tents if we have to, but we’ll be there, and we’d like you to be there with us. There will be an admission charged this year, but, for every dollar of admission you pay you will get a dollar’s worth of tickets to spend on food, drinks, games, entertainment, or crafts. If you spend your admission fee, additional tickets will be available.
We could use volunteers for this event. This takes about 30 people to pull together, from manning the booths to cleaning up, so if you have a few hours to spare, give the Shelter at call at 532-2862 and let them know so we can keep you up to date on what time to be there and what we might need. All of you who are on our baking list, we will need cookies, brownies, squares, home made baked beans and potato salad, for our bake sale table.
We are also looking for corporate sponsorship. We need prizes for the car show and games. If you would like to donate something from your store or business as a prize, that would be considered a sponsorship. If you run a service based business and would like to donate cash to purchase prizes with, we will be handing out schedules at the ticket booths, and also thanking the sponsors. Silver Sponsors are individuals or businesses who donate $50 toward this project, Gold Sponsors are $100 donors, and Platinum Sponsors are $250 donors. Perhaps your business would like to be the sole sponsor of this event, and have the only advertisement in the flyer. The cost of that sponsorship would be $500.
This event was huge last year, we had a wonderful turn out, we were blessed by good weather, the children had a blast, the bands were awesome, and I’m not even too much of a classic car expert but I thought the cars were magnificent. Market Square is going to be blocked off so you can view these gems in safety and pleasure.
Please contact Heather Miller at the Shelter and let her know if you would like to be a sponsor, if you can bake or cook, if you can volunteer your time, or if you would like to construct a booth for a game. Anything you can do to make this event the best ever, all for the animals, all of us working together. Thank you!
