Wildcats are second in Pony tournament

    PRESQUE ISLE – The Aroostook County Pony League championship tournament was held Friday, with Madawaska coming away with the title.
    Madawaska defeated the Presque Isle Wildcats by a score of 13-1 to take top honors.

    Madawaska’s offense was led by Ian Lee, who had two singles and a triple. Dylan Wetmore had two singles, Sam Beaulieu a two-run home run and a single, Devon Pelletier two singles and a triple and Corey Nadeau, Tanner Carrier and Kyle Tardif all with singles.
    Beaulieu pitched a complete game, striking out five along the way to earn the win on the mound.
    Presque Isle’s Jacob Player and Andrew Patterson combined to strike out nine batters in this game. Tyler Seeley and Scott Rynold had the lone Wildcat hits.
    Leading the defense for PI was Rynold, who made an outstanding catch in left field to rob Ian Lee of Madawaska of an extra-base hit.
    Cody Lyford, Seeley, Wilder York, Jacob Player, Keegan Ennis, David Cyr and Josh Gordon were also solid defensively.   
    In one semi final game played earlier in the day, Madawaska defeated Fort Fairfield, 13-4. Pitching a complete game in the victory was Nadeau, who struck out 12.
    Leading the Madawaska offense was Lee, Nadeau and Wetmore with two hits each.
    Pitching for Fort Fairfield was Austin Bernier, who went the distance, striking out 10 batters and allowing 10 hits.
    Leading the offense for Fort Fairfield were Zach Argraves with two singles. Landon Keizer, Austin Bixler, and Andrew Tuck all had singles and Carl Smith doubled.
    The other semifinal game had Presque Isle’s Wildcats defeating Aroostook County Federal Savings and Loans of Caribou, 8-0.
    Wildcat pitchers Player, Patterson and Josh Gordon combined to strike out 16 batters, while only allowing four hits in the shutout.
    Leading the Wildcats offense were York with two singles and Seeley, Player, Karson Wilcox, Gordon and Lyford all with singles.
    Making a key defensive play for Presque Isle were David Cyr, who made a nice catch on a fly ball to rob Reggie Rideout of Caribou of an extra base hit in the second inning. The Wildcats’ Tyler Proulx, Patterson, York and Lyford all were part of a double cutoff to cut down Dylan Greenier of Caribou in the seventh inning.
    Caribou was led at the plate by Dayne Savage, Kyle Wickstrom, and Rideout, who all had singles, and Dylan Greenier with a double.
    Pitching the complete game for Caribou was Devin Berkoski, who struck out eight batters and allowed seven hits.
    On July 26, the Wildcats defeated Mars Hill, 17-5. Player and Patterson combined on a three-hitter while striking out eight batters in five innings for the pitching victory.
    Pacing the Wildcats’ offense were York, who had a single and a double and Player, who had a huge day with a single, double and a game-ending three-run home run.
    Dylan and Dan Murray did the pitching for Mars Hill.
    Last Wednesday, the Wildcats upset No. 1-seeded Mapleton, 9-1. Player pitched the complete-game victory, striking out 11 and only allowing two hits. Saul Nunez pitched well for Mapleton.
    The Wildcats were led at the plate by York, who had two singles and a double and Lyford with a two-run double.
    Michael Donovan made a key defensive play that squelched a Mapleton rally.   
    Mapleton’s only two hits came off the bats of Brett Wilson and Nunez.
    Rod Brewer Design lost its game that day to Fort Fairfield, 12-11. On the mound for RBD was Corey Belanger who gave up just six hits in eight innings of work. Isaac Lajoie homered and had two other hits and Evan Waddell added four hits for RBD. Ben Buckley, Chase Norton, and Matthew Tilley also added two hits apiece. However, Fort Fairfield scored four times in the bottom of the eighth en route to the victory.
