First I  would like to thank Matt Hogan for all the work he and his crew did to tear down the old shelter building.  You would not believe how great things are looking at the shelter! We have new houses for our small feral colony who are thriving and healthy but we would really like to have some better housing before the cold weather, so if you have any carpentry skills, we can show you what we want.  These kitties are a much loved part of our Shelter family, and the staff takes very good care of them.
Also a thank you to Jimmy Cumming, Cumming Siding for repairing the vinyl siding on the building that was struck by a snow plow sometime two winters ago.  It’s great to have all the repairs done to the building and everything back up and running.  We really appreciate the help with this.
To our Shelter Angel, you know who you are, thank you so much for all the crushed rock and landscaping.  The space has really opened up and is a beautiful setting for those who visit, work, and live at the shelter.  The critters really appreciate the wide-open spaces, the clean and uncluttered yard, the elimination of the mud around the building.
If you are looking for an adventure, why not consider volunteering for the shelter.  We need folks to come walk the dogs every single day.  If you have one day a week that you can do this, and six other people have one day a week, then the dogs get a lot of exercise which is critically important to keep them happy and healthy. The staff does a lot of walking but with all their other chores there is still a huge need for others to come help out.  You could spend an hour and walk one or two dogs, or spend the day and walk them all, whatever fits into your schedule.
If you don’t have a day a week, how about one day a year – we are looking for volunteers for Sept. 11 to help with the biggest fund raising event in the Humane Society year.  We need folks to bake home made bread, sweets, and other items, we need folks to help work the concessions, serve hot dogs, cotton candy, help with the kids games.  We will be at Monument Park from 10 am to 7 pm on September 11 and will be offering Humvee rides, have a dunking booth, Tatitudes will be joining us, the bouncy house will be there, and we’ll have close to 100 antique and classic cars on display. The last I knew there were five musical groups or individuals providing music all day long. And of course kids games, all kinds of kids games!
Admission to the park will be $5 but for your money you will receive $5 worth of tickets to spend on anything from cotton candy to lemonade. Almost everything is a dollar, other than the bouncy house and Tatitudes, and almost everything can be paid for with your tickets. And if you run out of tickets you can buy more.
Don’t forget our best ever raffle.  We have sold over half our tickets already, we are only selling 350 of them for a 46” flat screen Sanyo LCD TV, brand new, and the drawing is at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11.  You can buy tickets at the event on Sept. 11 if there are any left, or you can purchase tickets at the following locations:  Houlton Animal Shelter, Varney Agency, Northern Musical Supply and soon, very soon, at York’s Book Store.
It’s been a very busy week at the shelter, with dozens of animals being rescued and re-homed. Join us, the rewards are great and we can’t do it without you.  Everywhere I go people have been so thoughtful and kind – your continued support is so much appreciated.  You can be involved in dozens of ways, from helping with a special project, to volunteering your time, or supporting us financially, no matter what you do or how you do it, you make a difference in the lives of the animals.
