CARIBOU — Take note that one’s inner child counts as a kid during the Caribou Cares About Kids events this Thursday, Aug. 12, through Sunday, Aug. 15 because you’re never too old to enjoy some of the events that the Caribou Chamber of Commerce and Industry has planned for the community.
Concerts on Friday and Sunday nights, a Saturday movie under the stars, potato racing on Thursday, Sunday morning car show — it’s going to be a tie-dying, spud-rolling, parade-viewing and antique car- shining good time.
Potato Racing is a new Chamber-created sport that’s grown quite a following in the past months, and the chamber has the event perfected. Potato car construction is from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Thursday, and participants are going to want to make sure that they have plenty of time to make themselves one speedy spud.
“Those wheels don’t magically go on by themselves,” said CCCI Director Wendy Landes, “they take some coaxing with the help of your parents and friends.”
It takes about half an hour to put together a potato car; racing begins at noon.
But if turning vegetables into cars isn’t messy enough for the youngsters, there’s always the Tie-Dye Extravaganza on Friday, where staff from PrintWorks and the Aroostook Republican will be cooking up free hot dogs for lunch.
Should tie-dying not be the right artistic outlet to express one’s creativity, there’ll also be free airbrush tattoos, or ‘tattitudes’ and plenty of chalk available to express any residual creativity.
“Did you know there’s such a thing as temporary spray paint? Yes — and we have some!” Landes said. “Come on down, and help us mark the celebration in the downtown,” she invited.
