The power of respect, the impact of choices and other issues facing our youth are the focus of Making Your Mark, a dynamic presentation by nationally-known speaker and author Ed Gerety, being held on Monday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m. at the Central Aroostook High School Gymnasium. Supper will be provided by the CAHS Boosters Club starting at 6 p.m. before the event. Two hundred dollars in Walmart gift cards and other door prizes will be drawn for those in attendance. Parents, grandparents, youth of all ages and community members throughout Aroostook County are encouraged to attend.

Westfield Jubilee

The annual Westfield Jubilee is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Aug. 27-28. There will be both old and new activities taking place, including tractor games and a movie on Friday night and a bounce house, kids’ games and pony rides on Saturday. A complete schedule will be in a next week’s column.

Rotary Club

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday morning, Aug. 3, at 6:30 at the Aroostook Health Center. The special speaker was Mark Shea of Big Rock. He was with the Maine Winter Sports for three years prior to coming to work at Big Rock. He spoke about the many programs that take place during the ski season at Big Rock and showed a slide show about Wednesday night events.
One of the most popular programs is the Ski Free Wednesdays, which is sponsored by various local  companies. Over 5,000 skiers and snowboarders took advantage of this program last season.
Other programs include Ski 4 Life, which works with local schools to provide opportunities for students to develop skiing and snowboarding as a lifetime sport; NASTAR — National Standard Race, which is the largest recreational ski and snowboard race program in the world; and Need 2 Ski, which provides an opportunity to be active and outdoors in the wintertime to area youth who may not otherwise be able to afford skiing or snowboarding.
Check out www.bigrockmaine.com for more information on these programs and to see how you can become a sponsor or advertise at the resort. The entire skiing community in Aroostook County is looking forward to March 2011, when World Cup Biathlon competitions will take place at Presque Isle and Fort Kent.
Another event at the Rotary meeting was the crowning of the new Miss Greater Mars Hill 2010 Rachel Donovan. With Brittni Mosher taking the Miss Potato Blossom crown, she passed the local crown to Rachel, who became the new Miss Greater Mars Hill 2010. We are certainly blessed with a beautiful group of young ladies to represent the town and the area.
Rachel is the daughter of Candace and Harry Donovan and plans to attend Husson to study nursing. Brittni is the daughter of Janice and Walter Mosher and will attend Northern Maine Community College to study early childhood education.
Also attending were Little Miss Mars Hill Gracie Giberson, who was named Miss Congeniality at the Potato Blossom Festival event; Miss Pre-Teen Mars Hill Kelsey Dominique, who was named Miss Congeniality and first runner-up at the Potato Blossom Festival; and Miss Bridgewater Lauren Antworth.

Bridgewater Historical Association

The Bridgewater Historical Association would like to thank all those who helped make the “Dance for the Dogs” on Saturday, July 24, a success. They are well on their way toward the goal of purchasing vests for the local police dogs. Another event for this cause will take place later this year.
Special thanks to all who helped with this event — the musicians Pam Green, Bob Heller, Simon Clair and Jann Votaw; and to Sharon, Ron, Dave, Gloria, Stephanie and Pam for helping with prep work and during the dance.
Other events planned include an Ice Cream Sundae/Root Beer Float night on Saturday, Aug. 28,  from 6 – 8.
Thursday Night Music is also taking place from 6 – 9 each Thursday with Outside In playing country, oldies, old time rock ‘n roll and standards. Come on down to have a great time listening to the music and dancing — or just tapping your foot to the music.
For more information, contact the BHA at P. O. Box 341, Bridgewater, ME  04735 or call Jann Votaw, President BHA at 425-7901.
