NORTHERN MAINE COMMUNITY COLLEGE President Timothy Crowley, left, joins in thanking, from left: Laura Doughty, daughter of the late Larry Cowett; Jensen Doughty, Cowett’s grandson; and his wife, Bonnie Cowett, who presents the family’s latest contribution to the fund created in Larry’s memory to Brian Hamel, NMCC Foundation Board chair. Cowett passed away in 2004.

PRESQUE ISLE – Family members of the late Larry Cowett recently contributed $500 to the scholarship that they established through the Northern Maine Community College Foundation in his memory in 2004. Cowett, who had taken courses and attended seminars offered by NMCC, worked in his family business, Cowett’s Garage, and was a graduate of Presque Isle High School.
In the decade before his passing in 2004, Larry Cowett concentrated his efforts on building racecar engines for customers throughout the United States and Canada. The Larry Cowett Memorial Scholarship is presented annually to a second-year NMCC student enrolled in an automotive program, with preference given to students in automotive technology.
“Larry was a firm believer in the benefits of education and was a big advocate for his field,” said Bonnie Cowett, Larry’s wife. “This scholarship fund allows his legacy to live on through the future generations of students who will become professionals and carry on the work that Larry was so passionate about.”
The Larry Cowett Memorial Scholarship was established as an open fund and is capable of receiving gifts from members of the public at large. Bonnie Cowett hopes this most recent gift will encourage others to give to this and other student scholarship funds at NMCC.
