PRESQUE ISLE — When in need of a primary care physician, people in Aroostook County usually see a family practitioner. Now, patients choosing The Aroostook Medical Center (TAMC) for their routine healthcare needs or for help with managing long-term health conditions have a choice: they can see a family practitioner, or they can choose to visit an internal medicine physician.
The ability to choose an internal medicine physician at TAMC is now possible due to the arrival of Dr. Mridula Sood, who is seeing patients in her office on North Street in Presque Isle, and Dr. Puneet Bedi, who is practicing at Caribou Health Center. Although there are a small number of internal medicine physicians in the area, Bedi and Sood are the first internists hired to work at TAMC’s health centers in many years.
Internal medicine physicians, also known as internists, focus on taking care of adults. Their in-depth training in adult medicine helps them treat people with complex illnesses and multiple long-term health issues. Many internists work as primary care providers in health centers; others specialize in cardiology, surgery or other medical fields.
“Internal medicine is focused on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of medical problems in adults,” said Sood. “An internist is able to focus on multiple medical problems and is able to handle multiple types of complications. The thing that’s most interesting about dealing with a diverse group of people is that every patient is different, and every patient has to be treated in his or her own special way. And I think that’s what really makes internal medicine fun and interesting and a challenge every day.”
In contrast, family practice physicians focus on providing healthcare for the entire family, from children to older adults. They are versatile experts capable of diagnosing and managing a wide variety of diseases and conditions. TAMC employs seven family practice physicians.
