100 Years Ago-August 24, 1910
Aroostook Times
    Hodgdon — Allie Huntley, whose father made him a birthday present of a nice sailboat, is enjoying the sailing on Mill Pond.
    White Settlement — After a long hard struggle the farmers have finished haying. Some have already begun harvesting and we hear the sound of the threshing machine once more in our midst.
    Houlton — The Dairy Lunch on Court Street has been leased by Mr. Campbell to Fred W. Hawkes; recently chef at Russell’s Restaurant, as Mr. Campbell’s increasing bakery business demands all of his attention. Mr. Hawkes will be pleased to meet his many friends at his new place of business.

RECEIVES AWARDS — Friends of Miss Helen Hughes, left, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elias Hughes and winner in several interscholastic speaking contests during her high school career was awarded a $100 scholarship at Emerson College of Oratory in Boston. Miss Jean Pipes, daughter of Mrs. Benjamin Franklin of Green Street has been appointed director of Physical Education in the grade schools of Augusta. Miss Pipes was a member of the 1930 Houlton High class. She received her B.S. degree from Sargent School of Physical Education in Cambridge, Mass.

75 Years Ago-August 22, 1935

    Picking wage — The Production Credit Association is a permanent cooperative credit institution organized to serve farmers with short-term credit in bad as well as good times. The picking wage committee consisted of 20 farmers to determine the wage for this fall. It is set at 4 cents per barrel with board or 5 and one-half cents without board.
    Fire ravages — An army of forest wardens, C.C.C. workers and volunteers are striving to subdue scores of forest fires in northern and eastern Maine. More than 6,000 acres, mostly in Aroostook and Washington counties have been burned over.
    Tragedy — One of the most tragic airplane crashes in history occurred near Point Barrow, Alaska when the shiny new Lockheed Orion, piloted by Wiley Post and bearing Will Rogers as a passenger plunged into a stream, resulting in the death of these two famous Americans.
    
50 Years Ago- August 25, 1960

    Houlton — One of the largest potato houses built in recent years in the area is rising from the ground behind the Fogg warehouse off Bangor Street. The new Butler steel building is being erected by Walter Davis of Houlton and his partner in this venture, Weldon Smith of East Hodgdon.
    Grain terminal — A new grain terminal is being erected by Robert Callnan off the Bangor Road. Capacity of the A-frame building will be 210,000 bushels. It will be the largest terminal in Aroostook County.
    Sizzling — August 19 was a scorcher to the point the thermometer at Thompson Oil Company indicated it being 123 degrees. In reality it topped out at 92.
    Golf — Entries were recorded with ages ranging from 8 to 18 at the recent tournament at the Houlton Country Club. In the Juniors event, Jim Gormley won with 44 strokes and runner-up was Andy Pierce, 54 for the six holes. Both boys are eight. Bruce McKay, with 39 in the six holes won the 10-year old group followed by Steve Gormley.

    Tennis courts — Work was started on the re-surfacing of the Community Park tennis courts. The work is being done by a crew from Maine Tennis Courts, under a contract with the town for $9,275. The tennis courts are operated by the Parks & Recreation Department.
    Softball tournament — Champions of the recent softball tournament were, Pam Lambert, Anne Blake, Candy Foley, Sarah McQuarrie, Jennifer Riley, Cindy Merritt, Amy Nason, Tammie and Tonya Williams, Jolynn Nadeau, Martha Putnam, Corinna Ivey, and Audra and Tiffany Karnes. Brenda McLaughlin was the coach.
    Captures title — Danny Carmichael of Houlton placed third in the world championship Raw Oyster Eating Contest held at Dennett’s Pub in Castine. Danny consumed 330 raw oysters in 20 minutes, the first place winner at 338 oysters and the second place at 337.
    Fitzpatrick gardens — Dorothy Fitzpatrick’s gardens at her home on the Jordan Road in Houlton are listed in the Down East Guide as a place in Maine where one may visit beautiful gardens.
