Williams, William S., 89, August 21, 2010. Arrangements by Brackett Funeral Home, Brunswick.
BRUNSWICK – William Stanley Williams (“Stan”), age 89, formerly of Sherman, died August 21 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.
He was born in Fair Haven, Vermont, at 21 Fourth Street on July 4, 1921, the son of Robert H. and Winifred (Parry) Williams. He was proud of his Welsh heritage and spoke many times of the beautiful hills and lovely people of northern Wales. He was predeceased by his parents, and his siblings, Alfred, Emrys, and Dorothy, and his wife, Priscilla.
In 1939, he graduated from Fair Haven High School. He worked at the Fellows Gear Shaper in Springfield, Vermont and as WWII loomed, he joined the service and spent much of WWII in Europe, while stationed in England, France, and Belgium. He was proud of being a Veteran.
In 1946, he married Priscilla R. Williams with whom he spent 63 years. They worked together on their farm overlooking beautiful Mt. Katahdin. The family farm was a source of joy and wonderful memories.
Stan had a passion for baseball and once had the highest batting average in the State of Vermont. He continued playing baseball in town leagues when he moved to Maine and was known as the short power hitter with the 36-inch bat. In addition, he worked in the family business of potato growing until his retirement in 1986. He enjoyed all aspects of potato growing and was very proud of the high quality of certified seed potatoes produced and sold to other growers.
Stan had many friends of all ages, whom he treated as extended family. He was always comfortable conversing with friends as well as with new acquaintances. It was often said about him that you could leave him sitting in the middle of a large crowd and a half hour later, he’d have a bevy of new friends to introduce to you. He could always tell a good story and had a wonderful sense of humor. His family was most important to him and he enjoyed numerous family celebrations throughout the years. His birthday on the Fourth of July was always a treat. He will be missed by family and by all who knew him and will especially be missed by his cat, Callie.
He is survived by two daughters, Rebecca A. Williams and her husband, James Henderson of Harpswell, and Sheila W. Mather and her husband, Dana of South Portland; his sister-in-law, Eula Roberts and her husband, Judson of Augusta; four grandchildren, Brady G. Williams, Leslie E. Gardner and her husband, Doug, Justin W. Mather and Angela Johnson, and Joshua H. Mather; and four great-grandchildren, Sophia Gardner, Madison Gardner, Cameron Mather and Colby Mather. His love for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren was abundant and he was proud of their varied and numerous accomplishments. In addition, he leaves many wonderful friends.
Memorial services will be private for family and friends at the Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery Chapel on Mt. Vernon Road in Augusta at 12 noon on Thursday, August 26th. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta, ME 04330 Attn: MTV, or to the charity of one’s choice.
