Viking XC teams host invitational

CARIBOU – The Vikings hosted a unique running event Saturday, with every school’s No. 1 runner competing against each other in their own race, followed by No. 2s all the way down to the No. 7s.

In the Caribou Invitational, the Ellsworth boys and the John Bapst girls were the winners.

The Caribou boys and girls both placed second. Washburn finished in a tie for seventh on the boys side.

“We would have liked to run a little better,” said Caribou boys coach Roy Alden. “Ellsworth is a good team and some of our new athletes are improving very quickly. I think our 1-2-3 punch (Christian Sleeper, Caleb Chapman and D.J. Flynn) is going to be hard to beat as the season progresses.”

On the three-mile course at CHS, the No. 1 girls race was won by Dacie Manion of Old Town in 19:05.03. Mary Jo Sheehan of Caribou placed fifth in 20:39.69.

No. 2 girls: first, Adrienna Carmack, John Bapst, 19:33.68; third, Mackenzie Belyea, Caribou, 20:07.58; fourth, Carsyn Koch, Washburn.

No. 3 girls: first, Nora Hubbell, Mount Desert Island, 20:36.2; third, Dayna Michaud, Caribou, 2154.39.

No. 4 girls: first, Amanda Lalime, John Bapst, 20:18.5; second, Natasha Bishop, Caribou,  21:41.

No. 5 girls: first, Laura Donovan, John Bapst, 21:29.64; second, Katie Plourde, Caribou, 22:06.3.

No. 6 girls: first, Ashley Richards, Caribou, 22:07.25.

No. 7 girls: first, Kelly Kashian, Caribou, 21:57.13.

On the boys’ side, Dan Curts of Ellsworth was the winner in 16:18.95. The runner-up was Christian Sleeper of Caribou with a 16:33.68 clocking. Washburn’s Nick Bragg was sixth in 18:39.85.

No. 2 boys: first, Caleb Chapman, Caribou, 16:44.69; ninth, Kyle Huston, Washburn, 21:33.31.

No. 3 boys: first, D.J. Flynn, Caribou, 16:35.38; ninth, Cameron Huston, Washburn, 25:07.72.

No. 4 boys: first, Blake Pattengale, Ellsworth, 18:28.47; second, Jesse Sandstrom, Caribou, 18:33.26; seventh, Kevin Carlson, Washburn, 21:07.64.

No. 5 boys: first, Lyle Stephenson, Ellsworth, 17:34.79; second, Ryan Washington, Caribou, 17:59.71.

No. 6 boys: first, Kody Holmes, Ellsworth, 18:15.31; second, Jake Michaud, Caribou, 18:39.77; fifth, Garth Kinney, Washburn, 23:23.59.

No. 7 boys: first, Derek Hawes, Ellsworth, 17:50.65; second, Kjetil Rossignol, Caribou, 18:01.44.

The next meet is the Presque Isle Invitational Friday at the University of Maine at Presque Isle beginning at 4 p.m.
