Nickerson, Alan A., 63, September 17, 2010. Arrangements by Dougherty Bros. Funeral Home, Conn. Interment held in the St. John Cemetery, Plainfield, Conn. PLAINFIELD, Conn. – Alan A. Nickerson, 63, of 16 Gallup St., beloved husband of Beverly (Swimm) Nickerson, passed away peacefully Friday afternoon at his home, surrounded by his family and friends.
He was born December 3, 1946, in Woodstock, Canada, son of the late Preston and Lila (Tommy) Nickerson and had resided in Plainfield since 1989.
He was a U.S. Coast Guard veteran having served for 28 years, retiring in 1993 with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer. He was awarded the Coast Guard bicentennial unit commendation, the humanitarian service medal, the national defense service medal with one bronze star, three good conduct medals, the Coast Guard meritorious unit commendation, with “O” device and two gold stars and the Coast Guard service ribbon. After retiring from the Coast Guard, Alan had worked as a bus driver for the Town of Plainfield and a truck driver for D. Clark and Son. He was a member and current treasurer of the Retired Armed Forces Association, a member of the American Legion and was treasurer of The Friends of Camp Quinebaug.
On March 11, 1966 he was united in marriage to Beverly (Swimm) Nickerson in Houlton. Alan was a devoted husband, father, and papa.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons and daughters-in-law, Tracy and Jody Nickerson of Waterford, and Michael and Heather Nickerson of Sterling; two daughers and sons-in-law, Janice and Brian Kohanski of Oneco, and Alanna and Jerry Doyon of Sterling; a brother, Merlin Nickerson of Prince Edward Island, Canada; three sisters, Doris Gonya of Bristol, Jeanette Farrar of Hodgdon, and Cheryl Crafts of Terryville; five grandchildren, Everett, Bryanna, Miranda, Rachel, and Sara; several nieces, nephews, and close friends, Doug and Cindy Clark. He was predeceased by a brother, Tommy Nickerson.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. in St. John the Apostle Church, Plainfield. Burial with military honors followed in St. John Cemetery. Visiting hours were at Dougherty Bros. Funeral Home, 595 Norwich Rd., Plainfield, Monday 5-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the ECHO Foundation, 330 Washington St., Norwich, CT 06360 or to RAFA, 135 Garfield Ave., New London, CT 06320.
