Presque Isle rec activities
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department has set registration dates for the winter basketball program.
Registration for grades 1 and 2 will begin Sept. 22 and the program begins Oct. 12.
Grades 3 and 4 registration will begin on Nov. 1 and that program will start on Nov. 29.
Registration for the fifth- and sixth-grade league will begin on Jan. 3, 2011 and that program will begin on Jan. 31, 2011.
Mini Hoopsters registration begins March 2, 2011 and the program begins March 28, 2011.
All registrations are accepted at the recreation center office from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call 764-2545.
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department is offering ZUMBA classes each Tuesday and Thursday from 5:45-6:45 p.m. The drop-in fee is $6 per class or a punch card for 10 classes can be purchased for $40.
The Presque Isle Recreation and Parks Department is hosting birthday parties for ages 4 and up at the recreation center, in addition to hosting parties at the indoor pool.
The recreation center is available Friday and Saturday nights from 6-8 p.m., with one hour of organized gym games included in the rental. Activities vary with age groups, but include wiffleball, soccer, basketball and kickball. For more information on rentals for the recreation center, call 764-2545 or email pirec@maine.rr.com.

Fifth- and sixth-graders took center stage last Tuesday for a tripleheader. In the opener, the Sting bested the Express, 4-0, behind two goals by Randon Mortland and one each by R. J. Gross and Jack Beaulieu. A pair of assists were picked up by Beaulieu. Alex Brewer of the Express and the Sting’s Adam Paterson both had strong games in goal.
The Rapids and the Clash played to a 2-2 tie, with Max Bartley getting the Clash on the board off a Ryle Mortland assist and Caleb Page converting a Mortland assist for the 2-0 lead. The Rapids came back behind goals by Isaac Devine and Griffen Guerrette, who picked up the assist on Devine’s tally.
The Crew and the Mutiny battled to a 1-1 deadlock, with Denny Young scoring off an Emily Wheaton assist for the Crew’s goal and Gavin Kelley knocking in an unassisted goal for the Mutiny. Pat Cash of the Mutiny and Grant Stewart of the Crew starred in goal.
Wednesday brought the fearless third and fourth graders to the field. The first game saw the Tornado shut out the Blizzard, 2-0, behind Amelia Theriault’s two goals. Molly Kingsbury played intense defense throughout for the Blizzard, while the Tornado’s Macie Kinney had a strong game for her squad.
In the second game, the Galaxy picked up a 5-1 win over the Hurricane. Savannah Rodriguez scored a hat trick in the first half for the winners. Starting the second half of the game, the Hurricane’s Libby Moreau scored to help slow the powerful Galaxy offense, but Taylor Hedrich and Rebecca Rider both had goals to help secure the win for the Galaxy.
The nightcap saw the Missiles claim a 2-1 victory over the Drillers. The game was evenly matched, with Zech Morse placing the ball nicely into the net to give the Missiles the early advantage. Morse wasn’t finished as he blasted in another shot off a great lead pass by Garrett Morneault. Jake Stevens converted a Sam Beaulieu pass to put the Drillers on the board, but they fell short.
On Thursday, the Missiles downed the Sounders, 5-1, behind two goals by Morse and one each by Chris Bearden, Alex Churchill and Alex Harvath. Jonah Hudson scored for the Sounders.
The Crew was also a 5-1 winner, with Denny Young, Emily Wheaton, Grant Stewart, Camden Bates and Josh Baldwin all scoring goals for the Crew after the Express had taken the early lead thanks to an Isaac Madore goal off a Hailey St. Thomas assist.
The Mutiny beat the Rapids, 2-1, with Gavin Kelley scoring both goals to send the Rapids to their first loss of the season. Griffen Guerrette tallied the lone Rapids goal.
The Sting remained undefeated with a 2-1 triumph over the Clash. Randon Mortland and R.J. Gross tallied goals for the winners, while Caleb Page came through with the Clash’s lone goal.
