Caribou’s Macek captures win

WOODLAND – Sunny skies greeted the 36 boys and 37 girls competing in last Wednesday’s Aroostook County Cross Country Championships, held at Woodland Consolidated School.

The girls meet was closely contested, with Presque Isle sneaking away with a one-point victory over Caribou.
The Wildcats totaled 27 points, with Emily Colligan placing second on the 1.9-mile course in 15 minutes and 8 seconds and the trio of Michelle Cawley, Amanda Palmer and Madison Shaw taking the fourth, fifth and sixth positions, respectively. Caribou, with 28 points, featured the meet’s individual winner in Kristin Macek, who cruised to the victory in 14:45. Robyn Larrabee of the Vikes was third in 15:11, with Emma Belyea seventh in 15:54, Madeline Gudde eighth in 15:57 and Nerissa Larrabee ninth in 16:14.
Limestone was third with 81 points. Individually, Chelsey Pelkey of the Eagles came in 11th in 16:53, followed by a pair of teammates – Shania Bell in 12th in 16:59 and Kennedi Smith in 13th in 17:00.

Rounding out the girls’ overall top 20 were: 14th, Anna Soderberg, Caribou, 17:07; 15th, Erica Corey, Presque Isle, 17:15; 16th, Lauren Chapman, Caribou, 17:19; 17th, Kelsie Washington, Caribou, 17:21; 18th, Robin Albert, Fort Kent, 17:38; 19th, Sirrea Deschenes, Limestone, 17:41; and 20th, Matteah Michaud, Presque Isle, 17:48.
For meet host Union 122, representing Woodland, New Sweden and Stockholm, Mackenzie Deveau was 22nd in 18:21 and Kaitlyn Ring 23rd in 18:22.
In the boys’ meet, a dominating performance by Fort Kent was showcased. The Warriors collected a perfect score of 15 with the first five finishers being Warrior runners.
Matthew Toussaint came in at 12:29, followed by Andrew Bailey in 12:34, Sam Ouellete in 12:42; Luke Bailey in 12:44; and Kamran Husain in 12:51.
The first runner from another team to cross the finish line was Caribou’s Josiah Krul, who did so in 13:23. Cristian Nunez of Presque Isle was seventh in 13:53 and Chatu Karunasiri of the Vikings took eighth in 14:09. Cody Johnson of Fort Kent was ninth in 14:51 and Tanner Edgecomb of Caribou 10th in 14:52.
Caribou was second in the team results with 49 points and Presque Isle was third with 67. Union 122 was fourth with 133 points.
Taking the 11th through 20th positions were: Jason Bartley, Presque Isle, 14:57; David Hunter, Caribou, 15:01; Logan Michaud, Caribou, 15:02; Caleb Hunter, Presque Isle, 15:03; Jared Michaud, Fort Kent, 15:12; Skyler Bernstein, Fort Kent, 15:29; Matt Burtt, Presque Isle, 15:37; Josh Boucher, Presque Isle, 15:56; Lukas Lagasse, Union 122, 15:57; and Buddy Daigle, Fort Kent, 15:59.
Gunnar Bondeson of Union 122 was 24th in 18:38. Dean Smith, Limestone’s lone competitor, came in 30th with a 21:26 clocking.
