UMPI athletic teams
have successful week
The University of Maine at Presque Isle men’s and women’s cross country teams made the trip to Wenham, Mass. for Saturday’s Pop Crowell Invitational held on the campus of Gordon College.
The women placed 16th as a team, while the men were 23rd.
UMPI freshman Carly Langley of Truro, Nova Scotia continues to impress, as she led her team with a time of 21:41, which was good for 83rd place overall. Justine Cyr of Fort Kent was 97th in 21:55, while senior Shelly Hanson was 139th in 22:53. Taylor-Jo Quint of Hodgdon and Alli Pizzuti of Caribou also competed.
For the men, Zachary Barnes of Presque Isle led the Owls on the eight-kilometer course with a 34:11 clocking, which was 198th overall. Fellow freshman Jaren Gray of Danforth finishgin in 35:03, good for 208th. Jesse Howard of Bingham continued to show improvement by placing 239th in 39:35. Richard Landry of Millville, Nova Scotia; Michael LeClair of Winslow and Samuel Johnson of South Berwick were the other UMPI competitors.
UMPI will attend the Runnin’ Monks Invitational at St. Joseph’s College in Standish Saturday. The women’s race begins at 11 a.m. and the men’s race is at 11:45 a.m.
The UM-Presque Isle volleyball team played a tri-match Saturday at UM-Machias. The Owls defeated the host Clippers, 3-1, and then dropped a 3-2 decision to the UM-Fort Kent Bengals.
UMPI is now 2-7 heading into today’s 5:30 p.m. dual match at UM-Fort Kent.
Goals by Devon Peaslee and Matt Carrington lifted the Owls to a 2-0 victory over UM-Machias Saturday.
UMPI is now 4-4 overall and 2-3 in Sunrise Conference play thanks to Peaslee, a senior from Woolwich, who converted an assist from Carl Nemer of Ashland in the first half. Carrington, a senior from Nottingham, United Kingdom, clinched the win with a direct kick which came with eight minutes remaining.
UMPI goalkeeper Joshua MacKinnon of Meritgomish, Nova Scotia saved nine of 19 shots on the day for the shutout.
The Owls next play Saturday when they host Vermont Technical College at 11 a.m. On Sunday, SUNY-Canton is the opponent, also at Park Family Field in Presque Isle beginning at 11 a.m.
UMPI women bounced back from their second loss of the season earlier in the week for a 2-1 double-overtime victory over UM-Machias Saturday on the road.
The Owls are 6-2 overall and now 3-2 in Sunrise Conference play. Carly Gillis of Middleton, Nova Scotia made the clutch play of the game, stealing the ball and connecting on a shot from 30 yards out that was out of the reach of UMM goalie Stephanie Wunderley. The play occurred one minute into the second overtime period.
Susan Lavertu of Madawaska opened the scoring with a goal in the 48th minute, but the Clippers answered 11 minutes later when Kylynn Adams converted.
