Viking girls split pair

The regular season is rapidly coming to a close for girls soccer teams as the playoff picture begins to come into focus. The last countable day for soccer is Oct. 19, with the postseason beginning Oct. 22.

As of Monday, the Presque Isle, Caribou, Ashland, Washburn, Fort Fairfield and Central Aroostook girls are all in the playoff hunt, while Easton and Limestone-MSSM are on the outside.

In Eastern Class B, Caribou (9-1-1, 75.7015 points) remains the top seed, despite losing for the first time this season. Presque Isle (7-2-1, 57.6531) is the third-ranked team. Caribou faces Mount Desert Island, Fort Kent and Presque Isle in its final three games. If the Vikings win out, they should secure the top seed and home field advantage throughout the playoffs. The top eight teams make the playoffs, with the seeds 1-7 earning a bye.

In Eastern Class D, Ashland (7-2, 56.1905) is the top-ranked team, while Washburn (7-3-2, 48.7405) is third, Fort Fairfield (5-4-1, 21.0714) is sixth, Central Aroostook (4-4-1, 20.1374) is seventh, Easton (6-5, 15.8659) is ninth and Limestone-MSSM (2-7, 4.5408) is 12th. The top eight teams make the playoffs.

Results for regular season games played last week are as follows:

Caribou 3, Bucksport 0— At Caribou Saturday, Jenna Selander scored two goals and added an assist as Caribou blanked visiting Bucksport. Olivia Sleeper also scored a goal and an assist for the Vikings. Morgan Swan stopped all five shots she faced. For the Golden Bucks, Bailey Blair made 16 saves on 28 shots.

John Bapst 3, Caribou 1 — At Bangor Thursday, the Vikings fell for the first time this season. Sleeper scored the lone goal for the Vikings. Sierra Pierce scored two goals and Maggie Lynn one for the Crusaders. Abby Pyne stopped three of seven shots for John Bapst, while Morgan Swan stopped six of 12 shots for the Vikings.
