The ADA as a tool for inclusion
Recently the Department of Justice published new ADA title II regulations that will affect many private and public recreation environments including playgrounds, golf facilities, fitness facilities, aquatic facilities, and boating and fishing areas.
On Friday, Oct. 22, Dennis Fitzgibbons, the executive director of Alpha One will be at the University of Maine at Presque Isle presenting a session at the Maine Recreation and Park Association Fall Conference. Fitzgibbons’ session entitled “Welcoming Everyone: The ADA as a tool for inclusion” will explore a variety of compliance issues and share creative approaches to meet various guidelines.
Since 1978, Alpha One, a Center for Independent Living, has enabled thousands of people with disabilities to live more fully and more independently in all aspects of their lives. Few Centers for Independent Living in the United States or other public or private agencies in Maine offer Alpha One’s variety and depth of independent living services.
Fitzgibbons’ presentation is part of a larger educational venue available to the general public for a small fee. Persons interested in attending Fitzgibbons’ session or viewing other topics offered at the fall conference should log on to www.merpa.org or contact Kathy Mazzuchelli at the Caribou Parks and Recreation Dept. at 493-4224.
