CMS finishes soccer season
CARIBOU — The Caribou Middle School soccer team lost a tough 3-2 overtime game to Houlton Sept. 29 in the Vikings’ final game of the season.
Caribou scored first when Dayne Savage took a Brendan Cyr assist to get the 1-0 lead. Colby Holdsworth scored the other Caribou goal with five minutes left in the game with a penalty kick that knotted the game at 2-2 to send it into overtime.
Leading the Caribou defense were Holdsworth, Taylor Thibodeau, Nick Frost, Greg Martin, and Matt Caron. Offensive standouts were Mitch St. Peter, Dylan LaMothe, Michael Hunter, and Richard Newland. Houlton’s Kyle Bouchard had a big game with two goals.
On Thursday, Sept. 23, the Vikings lost a tough 1-0 decision to Presque Isle Blue. That loss came on the heels of a 4-1 victory over Presque Isle White Sept. 21.
In the Sept. 21 game, the Vikings ran out to a 4-0 lead in breezing past the White team. The Vikings used a very balanced scoring attack with four different players getting in on the scoring action. Goal scorers were Cyr, Donovan Savage, Austin Griffeth, and Dayne Savage. Collecting assists were Dayne Savage, Austin Griffeth, and Dustin Bouchard. Also playing well were Newland, Michael Marquis, Gabe Massey, Martin and goalie Ethan Plourde.
Two days later, the Vikings put forth another outstanding defensive showing in the loss.
The team finished with a 6-9 record and showed good improvement throughout the season, according to coach Steve Perreault.
Turf management workshop
The Maine Recreation and Park Association is offering a Turf Maintenance Workshop for athletic directors, park directors and others who maintain turf areas on Oct. 22 from 9-11:30 a.m. at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
University of New Hampshire Sports Turf Manager Lance Tibbetts, a resident of Casco, will lead the turf management training entitled “Challenges Managing Sports Turf Areas.”
Tibbetts will cover a variety of topics, including maintaining goal mouths and bench areas; dealing with drought conditions; how to prepare the field for the game in good conditions and bad; and routine cultural practices that can be performed during the season.
The session will run from 9-11:30 a.m. on and the registration fee is $35, which includes lunch.

Club awards to be presented
The Aroostook Musterds Running Club will present awards for its 28th County Challenge Series at Nordic Heritage Sports Club on Sunday, Oct. 17.
The club tracks athlete participation in eight road races held throughout Aroostook County in determining the consistently stronger runners of all ages. Points are awarded for overall and age group-specific finishes for each of the races.
Participation awards for running a minimum of five series races and the Aroostook Musterd Runner of the Year will also be presented as will the 2010 Aroostook Musterds scholarship recipient.
The eight Challenge Series races this year were the Wild Katahdin Trust Snow Run in Houlton, the UMPI Spring Runoff 5K in Presque Isle, the S. W. Collins 5K in Caribou, the Musterd Mile in Caribou, the Potato Blossom 5-Miler in Fort Fairfield, the Island Falls Summer Fest 5K, the County Open Half-Marathon in Island Falls and the Caribou Labor Day Road Race.
Sunday’s event will begin at noon with a group run and will be followed by a potluck meal, awards presentations and a meeting of all club members. For more information, contact Chris Smith, club president, at 764-4816.
