MARS HILL NEWS
Sponsored by the Mars Hill Recreation Department and the CAHS Class of 2011, this year’s Halloween Party will take place on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Mars Hill & Blaine Community Center. This is the 19th annual Halloween Party held for children in grades 6 and under. There are usually between 200 and 300 kids that attend.
This year is being held as a fundraiser for the Senior Class. They will be doing all the work for the party as far as the games, supper, setup/tear-down, cleanup and organization, so you are asked to try to make a $5 donation at the door when attending the party. Your support for the class will be greatly appreciated.
The party will resemble a penny carnival with no charge to play the games. Just by playing a game, the kids will get a piece of candy. The more games they play, the more candy they will get. NOTE: Each child attending should bring a Jack-o-lantern or bag to collect candy in. Supper will be available, such as hotdogs, grilled cheese, soda, punch, etc — all is free for the children.
Donations have been getting smaller each year, and in order to keep this annual event free of charge to the kids, we need your help. Donations of candy or funds to purchase candy are being requested. Donation of candy or funds can be made at the Mars Hill Town Office during business hours. Candy donations can also be dropped off at Fort Street Elementary School.

This final Thursday night will include a special presentation to the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Department of a check to be used to purchase a vest for their canine officer. Most of the money was raised during the “Dance for the Dogs” held in July. The BHA will continue to raise funds to provide vests for other area canine officers.
The BHA will hold their annual Halloween Dance on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 8 p.m. to midnight. Tickets will be $6 per person if in costume or $8 per person without a costume. Live music will be provided by “Outside In.” Get your costumes ready and come on down and enjoy this “spooktacular” event.

Rotary Club
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday morning, Oct. 19, at 6:30 at the Aroostook Health Center. The special speaker was Dixie Shaw of Catholic Charities. Dixie is very involved with Feed the County and spoke about the increased need in the County. The supply is decreasing, and what is available is costing more. Dixie’s area covers 24 food pantries throughout Aroostook County, from St. Francis to Wytopitlock.
One of the best sources for their funding comes through their Thrift Store in Caribou, which offers household items from furniture to knick-knacks. Another opportunity to raise funds they are utilizing is by gathering clothing to be shipped overseas or recycled. Clothing is baled and shipped downstate to be sorted. Everything is used — to be worn, turned into rags or shredded into insulation. It took Dixie six months to collect the first tractor-trailer load. She expected to fill another in less time as word gets out and people clean out their closets.
Dixie is proud of the 3rd grade class at Fort Street Elementary School for their with their annual Service Project. The class decided to help collect clothing for Catholic Charities and have already collected enough bags to cover the stage at school. They plan to collect more throughout the school year and hope to call Dixie to come pick up another load soon.
