MONTICELLO – Mary Jo Trecartin, 62, died Oct. 24, 2010, at home. She was born June 18, 1948, in Houlton, the daughter of Elwood and Jacqueline (Ricker) Foster. She was raised in Littleton and attended school there. Although Mary never graduated from high school, she made sure each of her daughters did.
Mary Jo met and married Scott Trecartin, in 1965, and then settled in Monticello, where they have lived ever since. Mary Jo held many different jobs in her lifetime, including potato harvesting positions, bus driver and babysitting, but her most accomplished position is being a mother to her and Scott’s daughters. She cooked from scratch, sewed, knitted and crocheted everything imaginable – if she saw it she could make it. Hard work and Mary Jo went hand in hand and that is demonstrated throughout her life.
She is survived by her husband, Scott; and her daughters, Heather and Ralph Merrow of Waterville, Melissa and Jennifer Trecartin of Monticello, and Jamie and Chuck Hathaway of Woodstock, New Brunswick. She was “Mammie” to Nicholas Merrow, Hunter Trecartin, Destiny and Story Hathaway, and Christine Grant and family, who is like a daughter to her. She also leaves her brothers and sisters, Deborah and Kenneth Tilley of Tennessee, Gerald and Carol Foster, Timothy Foster, and Kevin Foster and his friend, Penny; and many other extended family in Maine, Texas, Tennessee and throughout Canada.
Many people helped along the journey, especially Terry and Linda Pilsbury, Diane Bartley and Andrea Kjenstead. Mary’s journey has been long, but one day at a time has been the saying and together that is what it was, is and will be. The family extends a special thanks to Dr. McFarland, Jane Zimmerman and Visiting Nurses of Aroostook.
