The No. 4 Southern Aroostook Warriors (12-3-1) fell behind early to top-seeded Calvary Chapel (16-0) and couldn’t recover, as the Sabers posted a 3-0 win last Friday in Bangor.
SACS coach Cliff Urquhart said a strong first half wind helped the Sabers get two goals and when they scored their third goal, it was their 100th of the season.
“We played on the defensive for most of the time, with the wind in our face,” said Urquhart. “I thought if we could survive the first half only down a goal or even, that we would be fine. In the second half with the wind at our backs, we really put a ton of pressure on them.”
The Warriors had what Urquhart described as “point-blank” looks, but they were unable to put the ball into the net. Southern Aroostook pressured and when they did crack the net, the play was called back because of an off-sides penalty. The Warriors had another late scoring chance, but they were unable to convert a penalty kick.
“You have to give Calvary a lot of credit, they were the better team on Friday— they deserved to win,” Urquhart said. “It was the first time all year I felt that a team had more team speed than we did. They won most of the 50-50 balls.”
SACS goalie Jesse Boulier blocked 15 of 32 shots faced, while Saber netkeeper, Jeremy Miller, turned aside 13 of 17 shots.
“Overall, we had a successful season,” Urquhart said. “We were not sure at the start how good we were going to be and set a goal of just making playoffs. When we started the season on a run of nine straight wins, we had to reevaluate those goals a tad. I’m very pleased with the way we conducted ourselves this year on the field.”
