Racing season comes to end

PRESQUE ISLE – The 28th annual Aroostook Musterds Road Racing Club awards were presented at Nordic Heritage Sports Club Oct. 17 after a training run and potluck meal.
The series originated in 1983 and included five races covering Aroostook County from Fort Kent to Houlton. Now with eight events, the 2010 races were the Katahdin Trust Snow Run 5K (Houlton), the UMPI Spring Runoff 5K (Presque Isle), the S.W. Collins 5K (Caribou), the Musterd Mile (Caribou), the Potato Blossom 5-Miler (Fort Fairfield), the Island Falls Summer Fest 5K, the County Open Half Marathon and Relay (Island Falls), and the Caribou Labor Day 5 Miler (Caribou).

RUNNERS OF THE YEAR –Thomas Beckum and Susan Plissey were named 2010 Runners of the Year by the Aroostook Musterds Running Club. They were recognized during an awards ceremony held in Presque Isle Oct. 17.

 

Overall series and age group awards as well as participation prizes were handed out after the season-long results were tabulated.
Age group first- and second-place award recipients are: 14 and under male: Trevor Levesque; 19-29 female: Susan Plissey; 30-39 female: Michelle Roy and Kimberly Wright; 30-39 male, Alfred Hanscom;  40-49 female: Angela Ewings and Linda Mountain; 40-49 male, Rob Langner;  50-59 female: Connie McLellan; 50-59 male, Leo Kashian and David Bates. Each of these runners ran at least the minimum five races required.
Twelve runners were recognized for running the minimum five races necessary to receive participation awards. They were Plissey, Thomas Beckum, Leo Kashian and Levesque, all with seven races; Wright and Bates, both with six races; and Ewings, Roy, Mountain, McLellan, Hanscom and Langner, all with five races.
The overall series winners were Plissey and Beckum, both of Caribou. This is Beckum’s first series win and Plissey’s second, having been top point winner in 2007. Plissey and Beckum were also voted co-Runner’s of the Year by their peers. They will split possession of the traveling trophy for the year leading up to the new award winner being presented in October of 2011.
Additionally, the $500 Musterd Scholarship was awarded to a 2010 high school graduate who is continuing his running career at the University of Maine and who is an avid road racers in the off-season.
Timothy Freme of Caribou will be receiving the award during his spring season with the University of Maine Black Bears.
